So billk, what else do you do in your spare time?;) Interesting how the largest spike is during early July. I'm part of the Atlas forum as well, which was closed down from late June until July 15th. When it re-opened, many of those members mentioned that they had discovered and joined The...
I was driving through Vernon, TX on Monday when I saw a fellow using a farm tractor (regular John Deere-ish tractor) to move covered hoppers around a grain silo. He had a cable running to a tie-down point on the hopper and was pulling it down the tracks towards some other hoppers in the...

Kato is making a second run of the SD80 and SD90 line. THe SD80s will be painted in CSX and NS. The SD90s are UP "lightning stripe" and CEFX.
Now for the important info: CEFX is a loco leasing company, which means that their locomotives could end up anywhere in the US. (hint, hint!)...
Right now, I have several custom painted Kato U30C's in DRGW that are very nice because of their size. Also, som C/P Kato SD40s in DRGW are vey enjoyable. Randy (of these very boards) is painting some Kato F3s for me as we speak. (Betcha can't guess which roadname!:p ) I can't wait to get...
Now that's a practical joke just begging to happen! Lock one of your "friends" in there (or your supervisor) and hook him up for a ride! One minute he's in Walla Walla, WA and six hours later the ride ends in Leavenworth, Kansas.
Or if he's taking too long in there (he brought a really...
Depends on which scale you're talking about. I think 2" for HO is prototypical and a little over 1" for N. I would say to go 1/2" wider than your fattest finger. If your tracks are too close together, you'll end up playing dominoes with your cars! Not what I would call a satisfying...
So the engine pulling the heavier load is faster, eh? A few questions:
1. When you swap the two engines, does the one now pulling the longer consist run faster, or is it the same loco?
2. Are they the same brand from the same period of production? a new Kato mike and a Concor mike from...
The only advantage that the LL GP38 has over the Atlas model is price. Aside from that, I would go with the Atlas model as well. Quieter, better detail, and MUCH easier coupler conversion justify spending the extra $$$ IMO.
Hey 88, where did you get your handle from? Everytime I see it, it reminds of a book I read several times as a kid called "The Runaway Ride of Old 88." It's a story of a bad-luck steam locomotive that has a nasty habit of losing brake pressure at all the wrong moments. Just curious.
Re: Workbench
That's about how my entire house is! If I know when the last time I saw whatever I'm looking for, I know about how deep in the pile of stuff it is! Some people call it messy, I just say that it's "differently organized." :D
Looks like it's HO. Too much freestanding detail to be N scale, but not enough for O. Looks real nice too. Some call that fantasy painting, others say it's Imagineering, and the rest of us say that's the way it should have been!
I can think of several right off the bat:

Have to agree. Very nice. That mirror at the end of the track really does seem to expand the layout. Nice job by the photographer of not showing up in the mirror while snapping the shot.
I've pulled about 60 when I MU a couple DD40's together (Nscale). They can't go too far without running into their own tail, though. My layout is 2 concentric ovals with a 2xover connecting them.
UP probably owed NS some power hours, or NS was borrowing some from UP. Could be that this what you saw is a result of a UP run-through train that crossed into NS territory. NS is "returning" the locos to UP, but getting some free Horsepower while doing so!

I've tried to include a little overlap in each pair to give a reference how they join together. I'll check my computer for more, but that's all for now.
