    What could have been

I had some locomotives custom painted for me by Blaine Bachmann and I wanted to show them off. For those of you that may not recognize the scheme, the Southern Pacific and the AT&SF (Santa Fe) railroads tried to merge during 1985-86. The application was denied, even though both railroads...

    D&rgw 5507

It's always good to see a untouched Rio Grande unit, even if I can't be there in person. They're getting harder and harder to find too.

    Installing micro-trains couplers in a Kato SD40-2 ?

I know that it's too late for you now, but MT sells assembled versions of the 2004 coupler called the 2004-1. They're a couple dollars more, but I figure that every dollar I spend on assembled couplers saves me at least $10 in Anger Management Therapy! Also, the carpet in my place is the same...

    Anticlimbers

Here's an illustration of what Terry talked about. This anticlimber is painted white (rear of the loco above the coupler) as part of BN's scheme, and is an example of a large anticlimber. Can't find a picture of a smaller one right now.

    DRGW SD-45-T2, ATSF SD-24-Low Nose

The easiest way to tell the difference between a -45T and -40T is to count the access hatches for the exhaust fans under the rear grill. The -45T has three and the -40T has two. This picture shows a SP SD45T-2 and a UP-repainted SD40T-2 for comparison.

    DRGW SD-45-T2, ATSF SD-24-Low Nose

I can't recall exactly when the noselights and classification lights got plated up, but they did eventually.

    DRGW SD-45-T2, ATSF SD-24-Low Nose

Unfortunately, the D&RGW never had SD45T-2s. They had SD40T-2's that were similar from a distance but different when you got up closer. Rio Grande numbered the SD40T-2's from 5341 to 5413. I'll attach a couple photos to give you a reference for numbers.

    New Locomotives

Andy, That's a real purty -109 you have. I've always liked the look of locos like that. And as for overhead lighting, doesn't your engine have a headlight? :p Besides, you can always tell everyone that R.I. Rocket is running just a little late, say about 9:30pm!

    Coupler Strength

There's an excellent website run by Al Krug, who's an engineer for the BNSF RR. He addresses this question on part of his website. http://www.vcn.com/~alkrug/rrfacts/drawbar.htm Also, check out his "Tales" section where he documents his travels and the photos he takes...

TestVille, a 1x4 handlaid test layout

Great looking pictures! I wish I had the skill and patience to hand-lay track. My motor skills and hand/eye coordination stop at the 'sledge hammer' level and I have to be satisfied with that. That looks like a great switching layout in addition to being a test-track. Well done!

    New Nscale 2-6-0!

http://www.mdcroundhouse.com/general/N2-6-0Loco.htm MDC/Roundhouse just announced recently that they're making a 2-6-0 loco, apparently based off their 2-8-0 Connie. It looks like it could be easily kitbashed into a respectible 4-6-0 as well!

    N gauge Switcher trucks

Simon, I've included a few links to topics involving slugs over on the Atlas forum. Many of these fellows will scratchbuild their slugs and I'm sure they could give you much more experienced advice than me. http://forum.atlasrr.com/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=16771...

    N gauge Switcher trucks

You could use the MT passenger trucks if you don't mid gluing on some different sideframes. I don't have any catalogs handy right now, so I can't tell you who makes sideframes. Another option which I have used is to find a locomotive that has the same size and trucks you want. It doesn't...

    Control stand update and question

Ralph - That's sure looking good! Do you get union benefits just by sitting behind the stand?:p You could also add a tape of dynamic brakes. I wish I knew where to find that sound, but if you take a trip to the Rocky Mountains, you'll be sure to hear it! Keep it up!

My New Bachman 2-8-0 (N Scale)

I've got one of those 2-8-0s as well. I saw one when they first came out and I couldn't believe how quiet it was. Neither could the shop owner either. He kept calling everyone who walked in over to the test track to show them his new toy and asked them to guess who made it. I don't think...

    Con-Cor Goose Update

Vic - I've bought a few things from them when I was in the store a couple of years ago. They pretty much are a Walther's dealer, although it seems they've dropped their prices recently. I was more interested in their Nscale selection (wasn't much) but their HO selection was fairly good...

    Couplers

Ron - MicroTrains split off from Kadee in the 1970's to focus on Nscale while Kadee went towards HO. The old Kadee Nscale and new MT (microtrains) are the same thing. I run mixed trains (Atlas and MT) and have yet to have a serious problem with the Atlas coupler. The early Atlas couplers...

    The Great Locomotive Chase

Excellent pictures! I didn't know that CSX still had so many Conrail-painted locomotives.

    Model Power Pacific

BLW has started shipping the ATSF, B&O, and painted/unlettered versions to buyers this weekend. I didn't reserve one because my favorite RR didn't have one, but the pictures look pretty good. (The plus side is that a bunch of old Atlas/Rivirossi 4-6-2's have started appearing on ebay. The...
