Went to a Train show today and picked up some good deals. I bought left and right Atlas turnouts NEW for $3 each. Picked up a NEW DCC Bachmann New York Central FT-A Loco for $15.00. Couldn't find the B unit anywhere! I found 2 Woodland Step 2 4% grade risers for $5 each. Funny thing was that...

I think what my problem is...besides being new at this..is that I don't have a vision of what I want my layout to look like when it's done. Yea I know...it's NEVER done. If I had all the room..I'd build a layout that was a 30 foot by 3 foot modular layout like I've seen at the many train shows...

Fred..... Duh....I didn't even think about the grade! I was just fitting in what I wanted for the outside loop. After reading your post, I put 5 cars on and it barely made it up on full speed. This is why I'm here. Learning thru more experienced people! Ed

    Wiring up a decoder

It's diesel. There are only 4 wires....Black and white from front wheels/motor and the same on rear wheels. The PC board between has NO diodes/resistors. I want to believe that it would/should be the easiest loco to convert. Ed

    Wiring up a decoder

I have a Bachmann Chessie C&O 4127 HO loco that I want to wire for DCC. I can't find any info anywhere! It seems to be a very simple Loco, Just 2 wires from the front wheels and 2 from the back on a simple PC board with nothing but 2 lights that are always on. Ed

Laying down foam for elevation. The Loco made it around. Once I fix some couplers I'll see how many cars it will pull. The elevation is 4 1/2 inches in 6 feet. http://f3.yahoofs.com/users/41c429c6z445240b8/747dre2/__sr_/d961re2.jpg?phALmaFBqXQafHvA Ed

First I want to thank everyone for their Welcomes and following along in my trek to build a descent train layout. Secondly, I want to thank Don (not in this group) for telling me how to join flextrack in a way I have never heard of before. It sure makes long runs easier...

Combat, Yes I did buy a DCC Bachmann Loco and so far so good. I've only laid out a long loop and it runs fine. This weekend I hope to lay down more track and some turnouts. We'll see how it handles it then. Ed

Thanks for the replies and YES this is the best place I've seen so far for ideas. I'm wondering if I should "cookie cut" my outside track to raise it for tunnels/mountains, which I really want or build it up with foam. Ed

    Cookie Cutter Method

Chnadler, Would the cookie cutter approach work if you already have the plywood laid, but not nailed except on the edges? As apposed to using foam to raise the track? Ed

Hello ALL! Ed here from Ohio. I'm 50 and never had trains as a child. I found an old Marx trainset last year and went to a train show to see what it was worth. I was blown away by some of the layouts I saw. I bought a cheap $50 trainset and a 4x8 sheet of plywood and ran the train around a few...
