    Bridge question?

Or, you could always leave it like it is, put a rock cliff behind it and presto... CSX'x line just south of Westpoint Academy.:thumb: I think there is a prototype for every "un-prototypical" scene that MRRers can come up with.:D

    Airbrush

Alan, How big is your compressor? I'd just stick it somewhere else in the house, or basement, or at worst outside. As for airbrushes, I have a Paasche H series, which has been a good workhorse for years. It's not as versitile as the VL (that's next, real soon), but with some creative moves...

    Help Identify This Tool

Yeah, Northwest. I knew it was something "north". I have one of the older chopping Choppers, but I have't seen the sweeping type in ages. The Calibre rig by Dr. ben looks to be well made, but it seems like they don't have any in stock, or they quit selling them.

    Help Identify This Tool

Wow, I haven't seen one of those in years (30+). I used to think it was Northeastern, but I'd be lying if I told you for sure, I think. I always liked that design because of the sliding action as opposed to chopping. If you do find out, make sure you post it here.

    rock molds and modeling geology

Yeah, I guess it is.hamr I meant more of the lines of either a moderator setting up a forum in the reference section where this thread would reside and have a geology gallery, or something like that.

    rock molds and modeling geology

We need a geology thread. That, or a gallery just for rocks and such.

    rock molds and modeling geology

Coal makes a good blasted rock. As for the "inside of the mountain", I believe the railroad museum in Boulder CO has a cut away view of a mine shaft in one of thier mountains.

    Reason to photograph outside

I used a slide projector to create the shadows on my diorama for the Layout Party, which did a good job of simulating old Sol. I wouldn't use it to light my layout, but for a staged shot of a model that is stuck to the layout, or if the weather outside stinks, this is a real easy fix...

Try the "Big W" http://www.walthers.com/exec/productinfo/261-506 Alexander Scale Models sells a stiff leg derrick http://www.walthers.com/exec/productinfo/120-7514 which can be easily "powered" with the Evergreen Hill model, both are real fine kits with excellent detail. I bought a plastic...

    cork and controller question

I've tried the cork, foam and homosote and will say that I am divided between all of them. Each has it's own pros and cons, but non retain every pro we wish they had. Cork and Homosote are great nail holders. Homosote is a great noise dampener, but you have to get busy with the jigsaw and it's...

    How flammable are water products?

Use the gloss medium technique. It's cheaper, easier to use and non-flamable. You can get the effect of depth just by painting the base varying shades of dark colors. Getting wood and other half submerged items to look as good as sticking in Enviro-tex is a trick, but not impossible.

    steel viaduct question

Hey Doc, did you find that your bridge parts were rather "flashy"? Both Nazgul and I were wondering if it was the norm for the ME viaduct kits, or if our kits were the last of the run (i.e. hot, or wornout mold) and the plastic oozed. Regardless, the ME bridges are just way cool.

    steel viaduct question

No apology needed. I just happened to know it because I read some books about bridges. Now you know it and now we're evensign1 . It's actually a common mistake to those who built curved plate girder bridges. Most don't find out until after the bridge is built, or almost finished. You found out...

    The Aluminum Benchwork Project

This stuff is quite popular with automated machine manufacturers as safety barriers. Here's a link. http://www.minitecframing.com/get_info.htm Not as cheap as wood, but it would be fun to play with to build a layout.

    steel viaduct question

If your track wasn't curved I'd say yes, but due to the fact that your bridge girders will be straight you may need the extra length of the bridge ties to over hang the girder. You'll have to take out the cork ballast anyways and the bridge comes with the track, so use it. It will look better...

    Wednesday 10-25; What’s On Your Bench/Layout?

Well, the workbench is part of the benchwork and the benchwork to the layout is still not finished, so I guess what I have on my workbench is my layout. I think. wall1 :D

    Canyon model

By the looks of the computer mock up, you could make the scenery from the track to the edge of the bench removable. I'd puzzle cut some 3/8" ply with 3-4 layers of 2" foam glued on top, then carve away the cliffs. Pin it in place with some dowel pins and any time you needed to access the...
