    Ideas for a layout (Im a beginner)...

    Hey Troy, welcome. Question about your space - is is accessible on all four sides? The reason being, if only one of the 8' sides was accessible, because the other was up against a wall, for example, you would have to reach clear across the 4'6" width to do scenery and trackwork, "fix"...

    Cat's in the layout in the railroad room...

    glen - If there are little-hands about, I'd be wary of anything that could cause physical harm, especially in this day and age. The 'shock treatment' sounds a little drastic, at any rate. Maybe a few stategically placed thumbtacks until the lesson is learned? Most cats I have known...

    Cat's in the layout in the railroad room...

    Why not just leave the cover on when you're not working on the layout? (And everybody, please don't let this thread degenerate into a bunch of sick comments, as seems to happen to so many 'cat threads'.

    miles = feet?

    This "compression" mentioned above may actually be a good thing, if you look at it as "leaving out the boring parts." Say you wanted to model a RR between two towns that are in real (or imagined) life 60 miles apart. and a train would average 30mph going from one town to the other...

    Advice needed on spur

    I prefer the left spur, mainly because it leaves the most open space (on the right). Another thing to consider, I guess, would be which one would give the best viewing angle of the new furniture factory.

    Packing Peanuts

    I don't think the shape (and size, depending on scale) would lend them to making a cliff face texture, but what the hey, it's worth a shot. How about if you ground them up into smaller pieces? Maybe they could be used to make individual rocks? Of course, you could just feed them to your...

    Track Cleaning

    Re: Material Question Masonite, Chris. I'd be wary of the scotch-brite stuff, might leave little plastic strands where they could get into gears and stuff.

    To the Canadian members

    For what's is worth, here's a repost of a thread on the Trains.com forum with a heads up for mail orders from the US to Canada:

    Track Cleaning

    I think I've seen some designs where the edges of the pad were rounded off so they wouldn't snag so easily. Also, masonite has a smooth surface on one side and a rough surface on the other - I think the rough surface was on the bottom.
