I had a radio shack Pro-97, connected to a Radio shack magnet mount antenna on my car (with only the top section attached). It worked fairly well, with a range of abotu 1-3 miles or so depending where I was. I eventually sold it as I really getting out much to do railfanning in the area lately...

    New layout in the works.

Here's the start of my swinging staging bridge thingy. I first screwed a 1x3 to the wall, to a wall stud. I then attached two heavy duty doorhinges, and to those a piece of 2x4. I then bolted a 5 ft piece of angle aluminum to a L Bracket and attached to the 2x4. To the aluminum I...

    Building large swinging bridge

Whoops. I noticed my pic doesn't have the other desk labeled on the other wall correctly. Here's a better image showing the idea and one of the wall corner where the bridge would be connected to the wall and swing from. Hopefully this makes more sense now.

    Building large swinging bridge

Hi folks, This morning I had a brainstorm for how to setup my staging without dealing with curving rack in a tight corner. Here's a pic of the lower level: Now here's my thining. I would put a piece of benchwork crossing the door at the bottom, about 6' long, 4-5" wide. Trains would...

Advice on what structure models to avoid

If you're looking for some Modern buildings, check out Summit Custom Modern structure model kits and cutting service I've got their Taco Bell and Dominos kit in n-scale, and waiting for them to get some other HO kits done in N-scale next year. A little expensive for some stuff, but it was...

    New layout in the works.

Pics, yay! Here's the lower level where staging was. It'll be the home of GERN's new processing plant. The area above the track will be at 1.5" high on risers. The track is on a 2% grade riser, making it's way to a 2" rise. Next up is where the Lake Charles water...

    New layout in the works.

Staging Level Revamp I’ll update with some pics tonight, but the staging level has been totally revamped. I completely removed staging and will turn this stretch of track into industry space for the upcoming GERN processing plant (a superior paper kit). The span on the lower level that...

    New layout in the works.

Yup, another new name. Today while I was trying to come up with a story for a new industry on they layout, GERN industries, I decided to base my layout on some real world places. It’s easier to come up with stories and such when relating to real world places I found. So I picked Union...

    Pre-Ordered a big boy

Call it a really really super impulsive buy, but I pre-ordered an Athearn Big-Boy 4-8-8-4 N-scale locomotive last night. While my layout is set in modern times, I've always wanted a fancy steam engine to run for those special excursion trips. I had originally bought an Athearn...

TESTING an alterative to Tortoise switch machines

You can buy a 6-pack for 89.95 at Tony Trains, and probably a little less on ebay. Compared to the 89.95 for 4 of these servos. However, while the Tortoise may be cheaper, I do like the idea of having a single board for all the wiring of switches and LEDs of up to 4 turnouts. Seems it would...
