    Outland Shuttle Build

Anyone who has had a close look at this ship will likely agree that one of the coolest features is the landing gear. The studio model featured brass tubing, working springs and shocks, and metal supports all around so that the landing gear were pretty much real working landing gear. I can't do...

    Outland Shuttle Build

Thanks for the encouragement gents. As anyone who has tried this knows...it makes a big difference to get those kind words. Now for a few small progress pics. First, an assortment of boxes, panels, and surface details built so far.

    Outland Shuttle Build

I had to go back to the drawing board for the side pods and the landing gear, but the new versions are looking very nice, and going together MUCH better. I've been assembling little greeble boxes like crazy, but that's all I've been able to do these past few days due to an insanely full...

    Outland Shuttle Build

*sigh*....OK...I can do this. After all there are only four of them. [ends pep talk to self and rolls up sleeves.]

    Outland Shuttle Build

Here's another image of the end piece completed and attached. You can see a few of the preliminary greeblies I've attached around it (trust me there are more). The side leg assembly is also attached on one side. This starts to give a sense of the main body's shape.

Here are a couple of shots of one of the end pieces being assembled.

Just an interesting little tidbit of trivia to add. In the novelization by Alan Dean Foster of O'Bannon and Shusett's screenplay, the Nostromo's registry number is 180246 (see page 22 of the paperback by Warner Books published in 1979). It also described the refinery as being an oil refinery...

    Outland Shuttle Build

Believe it or not, I think I have that Cinefex issue, too squirreled away somewhere. Now whether I'll be able to actually find it again or not is another matter. It may take me so much time and aggravation searching it'll end up being cheaper to just order them, but this pack rat thing verges on...

    Outland Shuttle Build

Agreed. He's been a complete gentleman and responded very kindly to my queries. He said in one early reply when I thanked him for getting back to me, that he never forgot how much it meant to him, when he was an aspiring model builder that one of his modelling idols, the late great Derek...

    Outland Shuttle Build

I asked Mr. Bower about the shuttle's name, and this was the reply: "Hi Duncan, I’ve never heard of the Shuttle having a name?? The only thing it did get likened to was when Peter Hyams said he wanted something that looked like a flying version of the “ Statton Island Ferry”!" So I...

    Outland Shuttle Build

Thanks dhanners. Being the packrat that I am, I'll go through all my Starlog magazines from that era...I kept them all for the several years I subscribed....maybe I'll find more stuff about Outland there, too. I doubt Mr. Bower would know of the final name given the shuttle...he built the model...

LOL. Nice space background render! I can see it already. I almost cursed you aloud yesterday Gearz, I spent almost half the day exploring Bower's site (again), when I had an absolute refinery-load of work that I had to do... His work and artistry are absolutely amazing. I can sit and stare at...

The actual model colours, and how it appeared in the movie can be quite different. The cinematographers would use filters and lighting to create whatever mood and tone they were going for, so the actual model colour would almost be irrelevant, except to us fanatics! It probably appears blue-ish...

    Outland Shuttle Build

Thanks, Wow another bit of trivia for this movie I never knew...could you tell me what that Italian shuttle name was? ...or any other fluff, or point me to where you found that info?

    Outland Shuttle Build

I had started this earlier, but the scale I chose first was smaller. I quickly realized that once I got into building the more finicky little bits on the landing gear, I would be going crazy with frustration, so I started again making the whole thing 50% bigger. Here's a comparison that shows...

    Outland Shuttle Build

Then the upper hull section gets built...then repeat for the other end. Repetition will be a big part of this build, as there are at least two, often four, of everything. You'll see what I mean when the landing gear and thruster arms are built. The main hull starts to take shape. The textures...

    Outland Shuttle Build

I won't claim my paper model version will come anything close to that, but I'll provide the base from which individual modellers can panelize and greebly to their heart's content. Here are some shots of my first few parts. It all starts in the middle.

    Outland Shuttle Build

Following the design work discussed over in the designer's thread, I decided to post a few images of my test build here. The Outland Shuttle is one of the coolest, ugliest, pure function-looking designs from the "Alien-esque" period of Bower's days as a science fiction model builder for the...

Looks fantastic so far...and the photobucket link to that awesome scratchbuild goes way beyond the few resources I'd already collected (I'll send what I've got, but that scratchbuild...holy ****!). Nice start, too. I like the idea of a strong base to prevent sagging. Theres nothing worse than a...
