    My Discovery (uhu02) build

Most of the nuts are hex nuts, three straight sides and three concave. Multiple tiny tabs were on each concave side; I just edge glued these. But I still used the large tabs on the straight sides, which helped a lot.

    My Discovery (uhu02) build

Nuts. I despaired of life somewhere in the middle. I made the first one with the little tiny tabs, all the others without. It worked out just as well for me. I wish I understood the Japanese symbols: could they mean port, starboard, and bottom?

    My Discovery (uhu02) build

So I started with a 5/16" hardwood dowel, 4 feet in length. It measured a little more than 8 mm in diameter. The dowels are color coded; 5/16" dowel has yellow color on one end face. I rolled several on the floor to find the straightest. I printed out page 1 on common 20 lb office paper...

    Discovery

OK, so it looks like there is some important text on the first page of the model. I see "9mm", which may be the recommended diameter of the wooden dowel used in the model. Can anybody get a translation of this?

    Greek Bireme or Trireme

The turtle ship paper models from PaperMagic are a small one that builds up to 25 cm long, nominal 1/70 scale, and comes on six sheets plus one extra sheet. The other is 38 cm long, nominal 1/50 scale on 15 sheets plus one extra. Both come with pre-perforated parts, and are made to go together...

    Greek Bireme or Trireme

I'd like to see some of those details on the Gubuksun model. My wife is Korean, and I've already built two commercial paper models of the ship from "Papermagic": http://www.papermagic.co.kr and I have a wooden kit on my to-do list, from the Korean company "Young Modeler." I've never seen...

Thunderchild - HMS Majestic or Polyphemus

A friend of mine made this really cool "War of the Worlds" diorama. He based his ship on a plastic kit of the Olympia. http://ourworlds.topcities.com/space1889/models/war.html

Why do you build card models

I like paper modeling for the altered state of consciousness it induces. Score, cut, fold, glue. Repeat one hundred times, or a thousand times. Feel the flow. And I also like the stupefied look on faces when they say "That's paper?!?!"

Thanks for the details. The use of the old cellphone charger is an economical idea.

    C3P0 - R2-D2 - Diorama

The C3PO is from uhu, right? What is the source of this R2-D2? Did you have to resize either of them? And, if you please, I would like to hear more about how you built the diorama background. My curiosity is my praise.

Looking for a Chinese Junk Ship model

History channel (history.com) just ran a show, "Chinese super ships." It shows a lot of medieval chinese hull architecture, details of the junk sail rig, etc. It repeats in a few hours, and maybe again at a later date.

Looking for a Chinese Junk Ship model

That Artesania Latina kit does look nice, but it's unclear how accurate it is. Below the waterline, it looks like a European ship; traditional Chinese ships were more nearly flat-bottomed and flat-sided. The junk rig sails and the deck furnishings look pretty good. It might represent a "hybrid."

    LIS Space Pod

The build requires a little thought, due to minimal instructions, but it builds up great and makes me happy when I look at. Jack has already pointed out the challenging bits. Thanks, Ron!

    Santa's printing press

Here's my build of one of Gunnar Sillen's models, from RUBRIK There is more to these Christmas models than you might suspect from a first glance. The printing press has a working screw mechanism to clamp the paper in the frame down to the type bed.

    Good price on Chokipeta Evangelion

I got mine from Jimbo's Papermodelworld, but here's another source for the new Evangelion model: Evangelion Paper Figure Book If you are of delicate sensibilities, it might be best to go to this site through the front door and ask to see only the stuff suitable for under 18: J-List -- a...

Looking for a Chinese Junk Ship model

First, to the topic of this thread, a good source for general information on Chinese junks and some scale drawings of river junks and sea junks, and details of masts, sails, compartments, etc. is Joseph Needham's "Science and Civilization in China," Volume 4, Part 3, Section 29 "Nautical...
