I can't decide on what to use for 2 x 4, 4 x 4 and the like.
Any help what be much appreciated.

ddavidv has some good input. I have the Kato unitrack and find it easy to use and reliable to run my trains on. Go to Kato's site and check it out Kato USA: Precision Railroad Models . Lots of good info there.
