    SD70 consist problems

How about a little sticky label under the fuel tank with "lead" written on it?:thumb:

    A rant and a proposal...

Haha, isn't that always the story. Those Hi Tech Details cabs are annoying too because they're sooo thin... one slip, you've screwed the whole thing. Still nice to have the doors open on my hi hood U23b though! Even if I did go through about a bajillion GE cab kits in the process. :p The hind...

Yeah atlas and whatnot are literally producing models that you cannot buy without having sound on board. I think it's rediculous personally, an unnecessary expense and waste for all those who don't want it.

How do you hide a rear access opening ?

Oh I see. In that case then have a piece of plywood board cut to fit the hole, then support it from underneath with removeable supports. Put buildings on top, and hide the seam under something.

I know exactly what you mean here. About a million parts just to make something hollow that could've been one piece. They think they're making a saving on plastic but they end up using so much sprue that I doubt it makes any difference. I built a model of a Hind gunship once, and it was like I...

    A rant and a proposal...

Oh indeed, and I'm all for those people who just want really top notch quality locos to run on their nicely scenicked layout. What gets to me is the fact that while these people are well provided for, look at us. Do we get absolutely accurate body shells? Nope. Do we get super smooth running...

    A rant and a proposal...

Manufacturers of model railroad equipment these days, especially locomotives, keep pushing the envelope in terms of sophistication, and I for one find this to be repulsive. They keep on getting more and more expensive, more and more complete, you have to do less and less to them to make them...

    SD70 consist problems

For number one, that's weird and shouldn't happen, 24" isn't exactly a tight curve, it's more of a medium. You might want to look at not the couplers but maybe the actual pockets they sit in, check that everything is installed correctly, and that there's not any problems there that would cause...

Got a problem, can you help

As for your problem with the shay, I'd have to agree with the guy who suggested not running it on a carpet. The oil in the gears tends to pick up all the fluff on the carpet which screws up the drive.

    HO Hand Rails

Smoke Valley is the company you're thinking of. :thumb: I'm having a similar problem at the moment in that I've got an Atlas U23B which is missing some handrails. I put them down somewhere and, that was it, gone! Any ideas? I tried emailing Atlas, but they're clearly not interested in...

How do you hide a rear access opening ?

I'm a little confused but I assume you're talking about an access door to the other side of a layout board (for detailing, scenery purposes etc.)? If that's the case, do you intend to use this rear access again in the future? If you don't you could always just hide it behind a backscene board...

Some things I need suggestions on...

Yes I've seen that model, pretending and failing to be an SW1001. The reason this happens is because they hear the words "The SW1001 is essentially identical to the SW1000" and assume it means that they're actually identical. As for getting up the nerve, you can buy sw1000 and sw7 bodies as...

    Prefab/mods???

No problem, any time. :thumb: Listen to the man who said you should start off with a few small dioramas first, for he is wise and all knowing. This is what I did, and it really helps to hone your skills this way. Saves messing up on the "big board" and wasting much material... you can at...

    Prefab/mods???

The easiest way (that I've found) to do it, is to get lots of styrofoam, a hot wire cutter, and put the foam wherever you want the hills to be, then using the hot wire cutter, simply cut it to shape. Once you've got the hillside that you want, simply cover the whole thing in a layer of plaster...

    TV/Railroad Accuracy

Some do, most don't. Some don't for convenience of operation. Passeneger locomotives/mu sets usually have them. For example the London Underground (subway) has them, but in one case the operator who died in the cab actually fell onto the dead man's handle, allowing the train to keep going...

Some things I need suggestions on...

The SW1001 cab isn't bizarre at all. Many people think that it's a "cut down" cab but in reality it's just essentially an SW7 cab with a bigger roof overhang - these cabs are lower than the SW1000 cabs, which means they just look lower. The SW7 cab is not quite long enough, but only by a couple...

Some things I need suggestions on...

Yes it is of some assistance. Hearing that the hoods are overwidth is very concerning. Just how overwidth are they? Are we talking, 1, 2 millimeters? Or more? I can tolerate a couple millimeters I think, just about, but any more than that would be unbearable. I have this thing where if I know...

OK so I'm planning a series of low-budget projects just for fun. I want to buy some Athearn kits and spruce 'em up a bit - and now don't go telling me that I would be better off buying Atlas or Kato or Lifelike RTR versions because that's what those sourpusses over at Atlas forums told me...

    light in locomotive help

Precisely, the power to the lights remains constant, and the battery recharges itself whenever the train moves. However, before you go running off into your workroom to build yourself one of these, let me just suggest to you to build in an ON OFF SWITCH between the battery and the lights. The...
