On3 vs On30...where do you get track?

Look at their catalogue. They have some swiss stuff in their HOe range at the moment. Fishplates ARE rail joiners. It's the correct technical term for the rail joiners that the real railways use. You should look up a company called Peco, they manufacture points, curves, and flex track for...

On3 vs On30...where do you get track?

If memory serves, they were not very well advertised, but appeared in their catalogues. Those were the ones that I saw anyway. They do actually have swiss models in their HOe line, take a look. They've released a lot of swiss HOe in the past too, which is quite rare but occasionally comes up on...

    Does this exist?

Currently your layout consists of grass mat, some unballasted track, and a few buildings. There are some people who would rather die than have a layout that basic, and would strive for professional quality perfection even if they were living under the poverty line. It just depends on how...

Athearn makes/made one, but you'd have to put a safety cab on it if you were doing the UP one.

Yes it is! I was wondering when someone would spot that. :thumb: The trackbed of the old Pentewan railway runs past the end of my back yard, about 10 meters from my house.

LOL, at least you don't take it seriously. Some people get genuinely riled up in arguments about the biggest and baddest.

    Does this exist?

I tend to think "largest" generally refers to physical size, not mass. Since large in the world of trains translates to long, because aside from getting slightly taller, they can only really become more stretched out. But some people like to be pedantic. :thumb:

On3 vs On30...where do you get track?

I do not know anyone who makes temporary layouts, and you're the first person I've ever met who has had an interest in them. I'd say that you're better off just building a permanent layout, and working with what's out there. Otherwise you're just going to find that nobody really caters to it...

    Beginner needs help

Woodland scenics do a range of great books on how to do scenery properly. Regardless of scale it's a good investment. Although I don't know any titles, I'd say you'll want a book on weathering. Some really great effects can be produced with a minimum of skill if you just know the techniques.

Meter gauge is 3 foot 3 inch, so that means HOn3 would be the closest you could get. By "south american railways" I take it you mean railways like the E F Sorocabana? To my memory, the locomotives that run on that are very similar to the GE 70 and 45 ton, but have much more substantial trucks...

I'm not sure exactly, but I know that it's old. The oldest that I know of is Pentewan, a Manning Wardle 0-6-0 tender locomotive, which was built in 1873. I know that by then it was a pretty standard design for narrow gauge locomotives in the UK. Trevithick's Penydarren, one of the first...
