    Kato "Super Chief" grief . . .!!

Jeff I have been hunting for some times for the right cars for my Golden State train. Unfortunatelly everything seemed to be different than what is available in N-scale. Now I just will use whatever I can find (mostly ConCor and Kato) and will replace the cars if they become available.

    Peco or Atlas?

I have Peco switches since they have a spring. There is no chance that a switch only moves halfway. Pecos will not work if you plan to use switching motors like Tortoise slow switching motors but they are great if you switch by hand or with solenoid switching motors. I also use Peco 80 tracks...

When did Bachmann upgrade their n-scale 8-40CW?

Unfortunately Bachmann did not change the part number when they upgraded their C40-8 and their is no way to find out what you get. Usually on e-bay it is the old stuff. This is also true for LifeLike stuff like the GP18 and E series.

Converting EMD GP7 to EMD NF210

Check out Atlas web site. They sell spare parts for almost every model they made. GP7 is no problem and SD24 is one of the newer Atlas models that should be available on e-bay.

    rough idea

I like the flow of the yard very much. Did you every try to start earlier with the switches but use right handed ones (First picture lower yard entrance)?

    Scale issues...

Maybe on of the original buildings. I read once that the owners came up with the name Pizza Hut since the sign on the first place they bought was so small it did not allow for more than 9, 10 letters.

    Shinkansen

    My first N layout

Stig I really like the layout and it is a perfect size for starter since it will give you enough practice for the next and the one after that. About US locomotives. Older switchers, like Alco and Baldwin would be perfect since the US Army used them in Europe and could eventually end up on a...

    Momentary switch

I use mini toggle switches like this one Here is a company I use a lot. http://www.jameco.com

    Regluing plastic building walls

Glues like MicroWeld dissolve plastic but are thinned down so much that it only will attack the top layer of a model kit. Since you used crazy glue, you sealed the plastic with a glue that is not effected by MicroWeld or similar. You would have to scrap it down until the layer is completely gone...

Turnouts: Peco vs. Atlas vs. ? ; Need update

I use Peco electrofrog switches with Peco switching motors (because of the price). I like the fact that Peco switches are spring loaded and there is no way that the switch is stuck half way. It does not work with tortoise switch machines but you can make it work by removing the spring. I use...

    Capacitor discharger for switches?

I checked out this web site http://home.cogeco.ca/~rpaisley4/CircuitIndex.html that has a diagram for a capacitor discharge unit for switch machine that take 16V and changes it to 35V to get better results for two-coil switch machines like Peco. I was wondering why not get a 35V Radio...

    Which Air Brush???

I have an Testor Aztek airbrush that cost around $100. About 2 years ago, it had a problem and Testor replaced the unit no question asked. The most important part, the nozzles can be replaced and cost around $10 and I do this about every year and I use my airbrush at least once or twice a...

    First Layout Design...

I like the latest design. About the yard lead. How about moving the switch for the yard under bridge. Of course you cannot access the yard directly from the outer loop anymore but maybe that gives you even more of a challange anyhow.

    Input on my layout

I think you should work on the yard a little bit. How about a yard that is not parallel to the end of the layout but in a 45 degree angle like the 3 tracks you got to access the the yard. I would try to use the middle one of the three tracks and would us switches left and right of it.

What Brand Track Do You Recommend?

I am using Peco tracks, wooden and concrete ties code 80. I just like there looks although they represent European and not American ties. For switches, I would not use anything else. This is just my opinion and I am happy with my choice.

Perils and pitfalls... yeah, I'm a newbie.

LeeC I like your older version better. You can have access without "cutting corners". On the left side- top and bottom curves, manholes, covered by scenery could be the solution. It is a little bit thougher on the right upper corner because of the bridge but I would still try to get an inside...

    Critiques of Layout

I envy the room but I would get rid of one loop. The radius will get bigger and you have more room to put in industries and other scenery items.
