    Converting to DCC

Start with drop in decoders if you have some newer engines. Wait on the one that need hardwiring and especially the once that you have to do some frame work. You soon feel comfortable to do all your work yourself. Some of the manufactures (Lenz, and others) even have the no questions asked...

    Introduction - new here

Welcome. I also live in Marin County, San Rafael and I am more into custom painting and have never really tried weathering. I hope you can give us some pointers. If your LHS Feather River Trains, it would be nice to meet once there.

    One heck of a collection!

I have the money but since I was not interested in buying those cars when they were sold in the store, I don't see the need now.

    makeing trucks from resin

The problem is that trucks are made out of Delrin that is flexible but Resin is not. I can imaging the weight will have a toll on the Resin and will start to crack.

    deisel house exterior lights

Many ways to do it. Grain of Rice bulb -> will need a resistor if you don't want to light up your entire layout with on bulb. My new prefered way is SMD LEDs. They have a great advantage since they direct the light in one direction compared to round LEDs. They also last about 100,000 hours...

    CNJ Bronx Terminal

Tim I just cannot imagine how to bend all those tracks in those perfect shapes besides the fact that I cannot imagine to figure out what shape they should be. You will have a layout that does not even need any engines and cars and still will keep visitors watching it for hours.

    Super-Detailing an Kato UP SD70M

I just put a SD70M detailing tutorial on my web site that could be helpful. http://usloki.tripod.com/detailing.htm

    Show and tell Customs.

This is my latest work. 5 Kato SD70M, what I call the heritage series. I added more detail parts than ever before, starting with fan grills, over twenty liftrings (3 different shapes) even on the fan housing, MU hoses, cables, multiple grab irons, and windshield wipers overlaying the molded on...

    Adding diesel hoses question

I used to use the older style Kato snow plow that did not have the hoses molded on. Later I used Sunrise Enterprises snow plows and recently I purchased the BLMA snow plows but I have not used them yet. I never tried to remove the molded hoses since I have a hard time to remove them on a...

    4x8 figure 8 crossing

I don't know if you are aware that you can go to the outer circle counterclockwise but have to back up to get back. If you have a crossover on the lower part of the layout in the opposite direction you would be able to move between both circles freely.

I need some feed back on this concept.

three things to think about it. 1. You have a cross over section on the left to change from counterclockwise to clockwise running but not back, except through an in-out-maneuver in the intermodal yard. 2. Freight Yard: to increase the length of the yard track you might use a different...

    Container crane

I have been searching for a container crane for years. www.searails.com sells or used to sell a model in N-scale. When I was checking it out, it was only available as a RTR model made to order. I wanted my crane to be as detailed as possible since it goes in the front of my layout. Now I...

    losing pins?

Am I the only one of thinking getting rid of the pins since I only have a big yard but no industry that would need switching? To use magnates in the yard is not very convenient and I would disconnect the cars by hand.

    BLMA fans

This is my latest custom painted engine, which I used the fan set the first time. So I am not an expert on it. I actually drilled one hole instead of many tiny ones. I used a X-acto knife and round file to enlarge the hole. The wall was so thin, I added a strip of very thin styrene to...

Why Is Z Gauge So Expensive?

Also another reason would be the size. A notebook computer is still more expensive than a desktop since everyting is so much smaller and has to work the same.

    Super Detailed Locomotives

It is an SD90 since the SD80 has a unique (strange) rear line. I don't think it is abnormal not to detail engines. I do it because it is fun and gives me something to do while watching a football game or NASCAR. I even started buying only undecorated models even if Southern Pacific engines...

    Super Detailed Locomotives

I am using BLMA cut lever, mirrors, sun shades, lift rings, hoses and newer projects the fan sets; Sunrise Enterprise windshild wipers, plows, lift rings; On my newest projects Atlas MU hoses since the bend better than the Sunrise ones. I bend my own grab irons from .008 brass wires since...

    Minimum size of access opening

It has to be big enough for your shoulders to get through. You don't want to wiggle in and out.

    What would you do????

I think you have a problem in the double loop. I don't believe you got enough track length to get enough elevation to cross the lower track. To me, it looks like it would need more than 5 percent incline which I would avoid with so much space.
