    Jac's Lines Layout Party

This is an HOn30 microlayout. Total dimensions are 14"X35". I used regular n scale track and the minimum radius is 6". This is meant to be a small tourist tram on a tropical island. A small gas-electric trolley will service a dock (upper left), a beach area with a few small restaurants (lower...

    We Have A winner!!!!!

Cool! I was away for a couple of days and just got this news. Thanks to everyone who voted and especially thanks to the folks who competed in the challenge. That challenge was a ton of fun and I think my entry just rose to the level of the great folks who model and hang out here.

Designing A Layout Based On A Single Industry

I think it's a cool idea. Eastman Kodak has a 19 mile line called the Kodak Park RR that dates back to the early 20th century -- it's used to transport chemicals brought in by the main CSX lines or freighters docking at the port of Rochester into the main facilities where production occurs...

    cutting foam inclines

On the hot wire cutter, you can get a cheap version called the "Wonder Cutter" that uses D batteries at most hobby shops that deal in dried flower arrangement. There's one for $8 (and also the nichrome wire replacement that Andrew mentioned) at http://www.dickblick.com/zz608/02/. I got mine at...

    modeling fall

Tea leaves also work well. A $3 box of tea bags will give you more dried brown leaves than you will ever know what to do with. I've also used the fall blend of "Fine Leaf Foliage" from Woodland Scenics. This is ground orange, red and yellow foam preglued to very fine sprues of wood. It takes...

    UP sues MTH

The link to UP's licensing agreement page follows: http://www.uprr.com/aboutup/licensing/index.shtml Quote: "Applicants are reviewed carefully to ensure they will positively represent Union Pacific brand values. These restrictions do not apply to in-home model railroad hobbyists who create...

2006 Layout Party Feb - Mar

I'm in too. I'm not sure what I specifically want to do, but it will be something, probably structures or scenery, on an HOn30 micro layout I've been working on.

    77Railer is in P.A.

You're about 1 hour away from the Steamtown National Historic Site in Scranton, PA. This is a truly amazing museum with lots of old locos and cars, a roundhouse where they restore old steam, and great interpretive displays. It's 100% worth the drive if you've got the time. http://www.nps.gov/stea/

    Jac's Lines - 2005 Challenge

Hi everyone and thanks for the positive comments. This project has been a lot of fun to work on, and I hope we can do some future challenges here -- keeps me motivated! I've had some time to finish up detail work on this project, so this post will be the last before the deadline. There are...

    Jac's Lines - 2005 Challenge

Ok, the better half insists that the diorama should get off the dining room table until after Christmas. I wonder if that means I'm safe dragging it out at 12:01 on the 26th??? Anyway, I've been working hard on landscaping and a lot of detail work. With free time next week, I should be able...

1930s Color Photos from Library of Congress

I did some more exploring around the Library of Congress website and found that the entire collection of over 1600 color images from 1939-44 are also online. This link goes to the alphabetical indexes. There are whole pages relating to different kinds of rail facilities and many fallen flags...

1930s Color Photos from Library of Congress

This link is to a new online exhibit of rare color photographs made during the late 1930s: http://www.loc.gov/exhibits/boundforglory/glory-home.html This was reported on CNN this morning and is a pretty interesting selection of "everyday life" pictures -- ordinary folk, businesses, main...

    ezdays-2005 challenge

Wow, I hadn't checked on people's progress on the challenge since Thanksgiving. This is too cool -- both the bashing (especially given the limits of the kits) and the storyline. All that's missing is an n scale Tom Cruise protecting his kids from the scary green guys.:thumb: :thumb: :thumb:
