What old time lines operated in your state and are now gone?

Within 25 miles of where I live now, outside of Rochester NY, there were: Erie B&O Pennsy New York Central Lehigh Valley Most of these I think got folded into the mergers. Today there's just CSX (with all sorts of rail maintenance problems) and a shortline that delivers corn syrup and grain...

    Jac's Lines Scratchbuilding Challenge

Thanks everyone. That structure just cries out to be modeled, and it's been fun so far. Ocalicreek -- yes it's HO scale. The building footprint to far is about 9"x7" Play-Doh -- the clapboard is also wood. I didn't build it board by board, it's 3/32" clapboard siding (the generic stuff from...

    Jac's Lines Scratchbuilding Challenge

I have some updates (someone was fiddling with the resolution setting on my camera, so they're a little blurry -- sorry!) Basically, I've been working on the main section of the building, trying to get the lines right, windows placed in the right sections, etc. A lot of the preliminary work...

New challenges start on April 1

I think I'll be done with my scratchbuild by June 1, but I'm all in favor of extending the deadline. With the server switchover, and summer stuff going on, it seems like it would be best to allow as many people as possible the chance to complete their projects. Plus, it's supposed to be fun...

Nail hole making tool for scratch building

Yes, Micromark definitely has these. The only problem is that the teeth of the wheels leave a squarish rather than circular hole - this is more of a problem with larger scales I think, and the teeth can be filed into a circular shape. Woodworking stores and fabric stores also sell them as...

    NASA Train Derails (5/2/2007)

CNN has video coverage at Train carrying shuttle rockets derails - CNN.com The MSNBC site has a pretty good shot of the engines - they look like UP with the flag logo to me, but I don't know the engine type: Bridge collapses; NASA-bound train derailed - Space News - MSNBC.com

    Wood Box Car?

Look for "double sheath", "double sheathed" or "ds" in your keywords at walthers. Accurail for sure offers them, the direct link is at: http://www.accurail.com/accurail/4600.htm The Accurail product is quite good and reasonable in price. If you're feeling ambitious, the double sheathed ones...

    Jac's Lines Scratchbuilding Challenge

Ok, I have done basically no model railroading since October -- busy job, lots going on, but also a general loss of motivation. I think, though, that a challenge might get me back in gear, so I'm going to throw my hat in the ring. This is a mill of some sort in LeRoy NY, on a spur off the...

Train Meets Wildfire in New Mexico

I saw this video online this afternoon. There's a wildfire burning south of Albuquerque near one of the commuter rail lines, and they have pretty cool footage: http://www.krqe.com/video/expanded.asp?ID=6324 It may take a few minutes to load.

    10/21 Derailment outside of Pittsburgh

I haven't seen anyone post about this yet. Happened last night when an N-S train carrying ethanol tankers derailed. I feel really sorry for the families that have been evacuated indefinitely until it burns itself out. http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/06294/732004-100.stm

Project Fuzz, Experts Needed !! :)

This sounds like a pretty cool and ambitious project. Out of curiousity, what are the winches attached to the brick with? I don't know enough about mechanical engineering to say anything intelligent about this, but I am wondering whether the two bolts I see in the picture are going to be a...

    Layout Plan=Conrail 1979 PENN/NY line.

There is a decent webpage with maps, photos and station information on these western NY railroads -- http://wnyrails.railfan.net/ Also see http://ny.existingstations.com/ which has maps and photos of railroad stations in NY organized by county. It doesn't have much on the Conrail era, but...

Question for subscribers to Railroad Model Craftsman

Has anyone who subscribes received the Oct 2006 issue (with the RIT club on the cover). For some reason I seem to be missing delivery on RMC -- the September issue never arrived either -- and I wanted to make sure the Oct issue has been mailed out before I complain again. Alternately, if...

    Heads Up...eBay E-mail Spoof

Uh oh, I wonder if I shouldn't have sent my social security number and other vital information to the widow of a deposed west African president who emailed me last week. She promised to split a million dollars in an offshore escrow account with me, and I figured "what could I possibly lose"...

    Coaling Tower

I use basswood purchased from micromark.com. The sides of the building are 3/32" scribed siding (meant to represent approximately 8 inch boards in HO) and the base is a mixture of 3/32"x3/32" (to represent the 8"x8" columns) and 1/16x3/32 strip wood. You can also get this at most good hobby...

Tuesday the Third and Do You Read?

I currently subscribe to Railroad Model Craftsman. The subscription ends in November, though, and I'm trying to decide whether to keep it up or not. To me at least it seems like it is more oriented towards technical details than modelling, and many of the articles seem very narrowly pitched...

    another Wal Mart find

These cars are cool -- I picked up some of the five packs a couple of weeks ago. I have one question, though: has anyone ever seen a camper being towed by a Jag in real life???:D:D:D

    Coaling Tower

A couple more. I will add a coal conveyor and chute, nuts and washers, and a substantial sand house. The wood is stained with a thinned black walnut ink. This is the first time I've used it, and am not too sure about it.

    Coaling Tower

I've been working on a coaling tower to go with the station I did for the last challenge. I think I'm going to do a small HO switching layout that is based on the interchange in Avon, NY. This was part of the Erie RR Rochester division, and Avon sat at the center of a fork in the line: coming...
