    policy?

I'm with you, Philip. As much as I wish there was a club up here in the mountains, I'd be out of there in a heartbeat when the smokers lit up. My days of intentionally breathing crap and coming home from anywhere reeking of smoke are long over Wayne

    whats is logging?

Pretty much it's the process of cutting down trees, dragging them from the forest and shipping to a mill. Of course, there is much more to the various steps. Wayne

    Basswood vs Plywood for structures

Thanks both, I'll try the 1/16th birch plywood, with a couple triangular braces inside to keep everything rigid. Now, to find acres of N Scale metal roofing. Wayne

    Modeling water with glass

My father used a pane of glass with some shades of blue & green paint below on our O27 layout back in the 1950's. It wasn't too realistic but, hey, neither were the Plasticville buildings. My daughter and I took the canoe out on our lake the other day, 21 degrees, sunny, wind calm and the...

    Basswood vs Plywood for structures

I'm getting ready to build my N Scale sawmill complex and need advice on the roofing material. The building is larger than any N Scale buildings I have built in the past. The wall material is 1/16" basswood which I have on hand and am about to laser cut. It seems to be strong enough for the...

    Climax class-A drawings?

Check this site for a list of Climax drawings They're from print sources, not online, mostly the Narrow Gauge and Short Line Gazzette. Wayne

Best website for the most railroad photos?

That is a very good site for northeastern lines, which interests me. But since shear quantity is what you asked about, it doesn't come close to http://www.railpictures.net/ with its 73,000 images. But thanks for the added resource. Wayne

    Attaching structures to module

Perhaps attach a bit of threaded rod to the structure, insert into a pre-drilled hole in the layout base and use a wingnut below? Might be easier to get aligned. Wayne

    Ore car recommendations

lemscate, I've been looking for drawings of a PSC 50 ton fishbelly ore car built around 1900. Ever come across something like this? I need a bunch in N Scale and can only find them in HO by Westerfield They letter some for the Algoma Central and say most were built for Lake Superior roads...

    Has anyone attempted...

Long ago, I "scratchbuilt" a Model T in N scale out of a 3x5 card, Elmers Glue, and a fine tip marker. From a safe distance, it was as cute as a button. Don't know where it went off to over the years. I think perhaps the vaccuum ate it. Wayne

Warning!! Please read and pass along

That's a bit harsh, I think. I see these on occasion, forwarded by cautious, well-meaning people that do not realize that that particular one is a hoax. Invariably, it does not contain a virus, just simple text. These hoaxes are usually designed to be annoying, not malicious and very often is...

    Ore car recommendations

There is a book about this branch: "Pennsylvania Railroad's Elmira Branch" by Bill Caloroso. I don't have a copy but someone here might. If you live along the branch, your local library or historical society might be a good place to start. What would the ore cars be carrying? I know there are...

How to Model A Birch Tree?

I'm assuming you're thinking of the White or Paper Birch, (Betula papyrifera.) The Adirondacks are heavily populated with opportunistic white birch trees in nearly every area that has been logged or burned, which covers nearly the entire region. I've been planning to make birches for a while...

    Gauge Layout party No. 4

So, did you road test it? It reminds me of the Utah Philips story about the guy that built a new outhouse and went in to road test it. When he came out, his buddy asked him how it worked. "Pretty good, except when I sat down, some loose change fell out of my pocket and down the hole." With...

    Derailment

We had a small 5.7 earthquake here in the Adirondacks last year. No damage in my house other than a couple of things fell off shelves. It was a pretty scary thing being shaken out of bed on an early Sunday morning, though. I went outside while the ground was still shaking and was struck by the...

    gap in roof

Most pitched roofs have a ridge cap or ridge vent running the length of the roof. In the prototype, it's to let vented air escape and keep rain out. It covers a gap between the roof planes. See, your gap is keeping to the prototype, you just haven't covered it with the ridge cap yet. Find...

    Benchwork-Submitted for your appraisal

By your use of the term cantilever, I assume there will be no other support except at the ceiling? If there is support at walls at the ends and the span isn't too great, there may be no problem other than sagging at the center. I'm a bit concerned about your attachment at the ceiling...

    Hand laying my track

Looking good TC! In the documentation I linked to, they also talk about ballasting the ties prior to laying the rails. I don't recall that they gave any reason why though, and I only see problems with the idea. (Spoken with absolutely zero experience in the field.) Wayne

    Favorite N Scale Manufacturer

I'm modeling the steam era so I'm not much help with your diesels. The only diesel I've bought in the past 15 years is a Life-Like SW8 that arrived a few weeks ago and I'm turning into a Class T Climax (T for Tyson :) .) I was pretty amazed at the slow and steady speed it can operate at...
