Perhaps you could try soaking briefly in CA or some other corrosive agent. I've heard this technique suggested for thinning overly thick plastic detail parts. It may reduce the fine detail, however. Just thinking out loud...of course use all appropriate safety precautions.
And another thing about staging - I've considered making it a 'badlands' that's off limits during the switching moves while it is on its own as a stand alone layout...for reasons of grade, or perhaps a bridge or crossing that can't be blocked, etc. These are real-life scenarios that must be...
Here is, I think, correct information about the origins of the timesaver. There is also a link from this page to various incarnations of the plan by different builders/modelers.

But, just to show that I'm a fairhanded guy, here's a...
Larry,
I don't think the timesaver was designed specifically for an NMRA switching contest. It has been used in that function (both in back-to-back and single forms) but I don't think that was its original purpose. I could be wrong and am willing to accept that I am with some proof, but I...
Timesaver critics beware...
As one who has built and currently operates a timesaver, I feel obligated to chime in and offer you a different perspective.
First, I built it as a test bed for hand-laying track. Only five turnouts, so not a huge expense in cash, time, or committment.
Second...
That's more than fine for a background structure, and in fact, using the paper instead of transparancy sheet probably shows the window dirt, lines, etc. that much better. Thanks for the pictures, looks like you did an excellent job, even up close!
Great work, Loren! And thanks to scottcn for the mention of the thread I started oh so long ago.
So how long would you say this took you? Also, I'd love to see some closer shots of the windows and skylight detail.
I really enjoyed the project and have contemplated getting another from...
Just found this thread and it's inspiring. I am going home tonight after work and cleaning up my space so that I can take some updated pictures and post them here.
I too am using the shelf system and highly recommend it.
Gary - just how 'removable' is that section in front of the breaker...
Excellent! Can I suggest shifting the backdrop a bit in the lower left hand corner, curving it from the 0/0 point in towards the 1' mark along the bottom. One of Iain Rice's favorite design tools is the 'proscenium arch' effect with full fascia above and below the scene. You could "cove-in"...
The Hatch plan looks really nice, thanks for posting! But there must be some insane grades! I like grades...shortens train lengths which make trains very appropriate for many logging & mining lines.
What about On30, using only the smallest cars, or On18 even? If the grades are steep enough...
Has it really been a couple months since I last posted? Funny how "I oughta work on that some time" gets repeated over and over until the time just slips away. Well, now that the rainy weather has come in full force, and many of the inside jobs are winding down, I may make more time for this...
What bothered me about the plan...and I mention this because maybe it's bothering you too?...was the lack of scene-cerity. A flume or drag line could have brought the logs downhill on the 'logging camp' side of the line, eliminating the need for the track uphill. Just seemed like alot of track...
I agree that eliminating the tunnels would be in the spirit of logging lines. But they really are integral to the Rice plan. I've studied it for some time as I too once contemplated building it.
I'm gonna write a longer reply a bit later, but for now I have to say just how great it has been watching you build this layout. What a journey! <sniff>
Amen, brother! But don't beat yourself up or be in too much of a hurry to get it forested. You've got a great result right now! The addition of a little lighter foam is VERY well done and serves its purpose of creating depth and interest (vs. just being the 'thing' to do because the mags say...
Looking great! You can always use spare rail as vertical reinforcement for that wall...the prototype did also. How are you planning on working the footings for the mine into the ground?
