    ground cover

Actually I meant the ground foam, like from Woodland Scenics. I reread it and I guess really didn't say which foam I was refering to. I usually do a base color and texture coat - 99 cent craft paint (Delta) from Walmart stirred into lightweight spackle. After that dries I may paint it a...

    ground cover

Depends...I voted for "paint first", but lemme 'splain. If you use a 'ground goop' like a sculptamold/glue/vermiculite mix then probably you'd mix some sort of paint, powdered or otherwise, into the goop. Same with tinting plaster. It's coloring the base somehow so that if it chips or cracks...

    MDC/Roundhouse Ore Car Detailing

Yeah, I've got my hands full with an ambitious steam engine detailing project at the moment, so I was thinking somewhere above basic but not anywhere near 'museum quality'. The cars won't be a major feature of the layout, but will be part of regular service and switching at a mine...someday...

    MDC/Roundhouse Ore Car Detailing

Hello All, I'm starting this thread to kick myself into gear on finishing another project that's been sitting around too long half completed. I purchased a set of 6 ore cars that were at one time drawbar connected by the original owner, in two groups of three cars. Not sure how I want to do...

Picture thread of your Logging, Mining, or unique industrial equipment.

Great idea for a thread starter. Nice rolling stock that reminds me of what I see around here (Longview/Kelso, WA - Weyerhauser RR stuff). You seem to have captured the look.

N&W CF Caboose - AMB (IMAGE HEAVY!)

Outstanding work! Those platform shields really add a distinctive touch. Again, thanks for sharing and I must echo Wayne, as one whose own picture threads are also wordy, thanks for the explanations. [BTW, Wayne, why so brief? Only kidding.] Keep sharing your progress!

    How to harden plaster...?

Ditto to Kevin's advice, then paint with crackle medium to simulate bark. Follow the directions on the crackle medium to acheive good results or experiment a bit and perhaps come up with something better. If you use the Delta brand crackle, it's cheap so you can afford to experiment a bit.

N&W CF Caboose - AMB (IMAGE HEAVY!)

Had that problem once when I was taking shots for a superdetailing project (Mantua 0-4-0 Shifter...still in progress). Plenty of detail shots, but no overall views. Fortunately, I wasn't the only one who had taken pics of this engine and I found more online. Good luck!

much adeiu about nothing... or a 14' x 15' loosely based on FGLK

Next question - what sort of grades will you use on the descent/ascent into/out of staging, and on the main line above/crossing over the staging lead? Nice changes, a great plan!

much adeiu about nothing... or a 14' x 15' loosely based on FGLK

You know, after studying the plan, I may have answered my own question. I can see how moving the passing siding away from the industry keeps an inside curve up front (which IMO makes trains look better and curves seem broader), minimizes the amount of retaining wall necessary between tracks...

much adeiu about nothing... or a 14' x 15' loosely based on FGLK

Very nice work. Why did you choose a crossover on the lower turnback vs just sending it around the curve, with the staging cutoff descending and the return ascending? And what do you have planned to go in that space?

Is 4' by 8' large enough?

That structure..."Mainline & Siding" manufacturer perhaps? Nice inspiration shots...good luck with the planning! Also, you may not have to compromise much if you switched (Gasp!) to N-scale. I'm perfectly content in HO and it sounds like you are too, so that may not even be a consideration...

    Grain Elevator/Mill

Dadgum, Steve! I go away on vacation and drift away from checking The Gauge regularly and you go off and become a scratchbuilding master! Very excellent work. I can't wait to see the plan for the layout. No, really, post it ASAP! I also appreciate all the punny comments people...

    Club Layouts

Re: Dams... I know a fellow in Florida who is planning on including one, also to hide some hidden track, I believe. Ditto on the OCMR, except I was one of the infamous 'black diesel bunch', in that I was a N&W fan (the others were NS and PC). Never actually ran any black diesels, but my VGN...

    here I go again

Kevin, Have you ever considered the old Ulrich/Walther's Sierra shorty cars? They're HO standard gauge, but on the narrow side so would be a good candidate for HOn3. Great work on a very neat little caboose.

N&W CF Caboose - AMB (IMAGE HEAVY!)

Thanks for this thread - I've been considering buying one of these kits off ebay for some time. There was one vendor who offered it with the wire detail kit in a package deal but I spent the disposable income other places...still, I have a couple cabeese I will be working up for the railway in...

    Another new layout!

Just how close are you and this girlfriend?:whip1: Use this line and see how well it goes over: "Honey, If you love me...you'll let me have the whole room for my trains!" OR, convince her that they're really "our" trains, and that she'll appreciate the 'around-the-walls' plan you've...

    Greetings from California

Thankfully, we moved away from there last year! And yet I don't have to wish they all could be California girls, as I married one. No, really, I enjoyed my time in SoCal (La Mirada, Diamond Bar, Fullerton). I was also part of the Orange County Module Railroaders (like Russ, who introduced me...

    way to go Walthers!

I've received great service from Jaks, regarding an old SS Ltd kit I found on ebay. Two of a righty part when it should have been one righty one lefty, and a broken piece of stripwood. Both were replaced in a very timely manner and great courtesy via email.
