Maggie Here's a little combine I kitbashed a few years ago. The first pic shows the dockside switcher (an MDC Critter) shoving her down the rails. Next is the other end after she has been spotted down near the section house and rail gang materials storage. Looks like she may be coupled on...

    Scratch-Bashed Service station

Yes, please do. That's a very clever idea! I was just looking at Earl Smallshaw's website the other day, specifically at a little jig one of the members of the Hartford Workshop had made to turn aluminum foil into corrugated sheet metal. Creativity abounds! I'm glad we have these forums (and...

Oiling rods & drivers on brass steamers

My grandfather (a former car inspector/shop worker, 40 years, N&W) showed me how to put a drop of three in one oil on an old lid then just barely touch a broom straw to it before putting the broomstraw on the joint. Just touch the oil then touch the spot, but never with very much oil on the...

    Ulrich Sierra Cars

Thanks for the compliments, Russ. It's a boy. Before we brought him home from the hospital my older son (still feels wierd to say that) had already decided that once he gets home he will play trains. Attaboy! These little Walthers coach seats are nice, but I'm beginning to wonder if...

    Ulrich Sierra Cars

Excellent idea! A single strip of styrene or wood running the length of the car beneath the seats could suffice to support the seat itself along the walls. I've got a Chopper II that has never been used...that may work for narrowing the seats. I'd just set the width stop to get them the same...

Dokey Okey. Hopefully you can see the outstanding underbody work - not that my workmanship is all that, but speaking strictly about what the kit provides. It was fun building that brake rigging, although I don't think I'd do that for all my rolling stock. I'll certainly install it on the...

    Sugar Hoppers!

"Sweet"...<moan>...somebody had to say it, I guess. Hey Zelda, glad you replied! Is there a sugar or confections car in the Sodor fleet?

Kevin - The seats are a flat plastic seat and back piece that is bent to shape, then an armrest/side/leg piece is glued on each side. I'm leaning that way too, narrowing both sides. I just saw "High Noon" a few nights back ("Do not forsake me oh my darlin...", just to stick that song in your...

    Sugar Hoppers!

In the same vein as the recent billboard reefer thread, a recent find at my LHS turned up this gem: I can't find a maker's mark on there anywhere so I'm hoping somebody can help me out. It has a metal reservoir inside. The long screw knob is for opening the flow hole above the slider pad...

    Ulrich Sierra Cars

Howdy All! I've been keeping busy with parenting (brand new baby as of 9/21:mrgreen:) and other honeydos. Still, in the moments in between these activities I have managed to sit at my workbench and just stare at the Shifter project:confused:. It has stalled again and, while no doubt it...

    Remember Mel Thornburgh ?

Dave - Fantastic work! I've been 'finishing one up' for a few years now (Mantua Shifter redetailing project) but to see one that's been shelved for so long gives me both hope and dread! But seriously, I'm glad to see you are revisiting the hobby afresh and with renewed vigor. Speaking of...

    Need some window screen??

Also try metal coffee filter baskets. I recently switched back to paper filters just because I could pick the whole thing up and toss it and the grounds in my compost bin. I had been using the metal one since it was easy to rinse out but although I was saving paper, I was dumping many grounds...

Van Hobbies brass CNR N-5-d 2-8-0 rebuild

I was recently referred to this site. For what you're doing, it's right up your alley! http://markschutzer.com/index.htm Nice work so far, can't wait to see the finished product. Galen

Tip: HO Scale windows using Graphic tape

The door should be an easy fix, if it needs to be. Depends on how the building will be placed (or, if you're just picky like me, then you just HAVE to fix it because you know it's there and it'll bug you if you don't!...but that's just me...) Thanks for the modelbuilder review. I may have to...

    G.E.C's layout pictures

So...how is that different from what you've got now? I've had the sketching stuff out for a while, so mebbe I'll bump the planning thread again. I've heard of folks using a dummy flyover track as a programming track for DCC. A stage for a photo track would certainly work too. Can you give...

Tip: HO Scale windows using Graphic tape

Great work! I've been staring at that last picture to figure out what was bugging me...then it hit me - the door looks chopped off on the bottom! Was this intentional? Visited your Passingloop site - nice links! How do you like the Modelbuilder software? Seems to make some great textures...

    MDC/Roundhouse Ore Car Detailing

please, go ahead! Drew, Go ahead and tell me more about the conversion (especially if you've got pictures). You're the first person in a few months to reply to this thread, and since I started it, I say go ahead! Thanks for your reply.:thumb: I plan on replacing the wheelsets with metal...

Tip: HO Scale windows using Graphic tape

Reminds me of the old taut-thread trick, where two or more threads are pulled taut across the window area then tacked into place with glue. The excess thread can be cut away and reused, but the tension keeps them from going wavy. Nice work, btw. Now let's see the rest of the building!

Idaho Springs Mine (Campbell craftsman kit)

Hey there Steve! I'll be watching the progress - glad to see you back in the saddle. I've been off n on all summer (if you can call it that with this wacky weather) so I can comiserate with you...but my son isn't into weightlifting yet. He's still into the little wooden trains so I can get my...

    square or vanderbuilt?

Kevin - that's a fine looking little Atlantic regardless of the tender choice (the vandy does give it that SP look, however). Did you repaint it or is that the original finish? And where did you find a Mantua 4-4-2 that wasn't a PRR E-6 (with the Belpaire firebox)? I've been keeping my eyes on...
