    Childhood train influence?

I love the LIRR. Its a shame they don't have a steam excursion run out there once in a while.

    Childhood train influence?

I had Lionel and other trains as a kid. Watched Shining Time Station on PBS, used to live close to railroad tracks. I had literally a million train related influences in my childhood. Plus I love history and the historical side of railroads.

    Glueing Foam Board to Benchwork

Liquid nails is definitely the best in my opinion, but its pricey. I also used wood glue once, seemed to work alright. Good luck!

    square or vanderbuilt?

I like Vandy's, but they look better on larger engines, like 4-8-2's. Besides, Atlantic's have such a graceful, balanced look, a simple square tender fits them well. Btw, if anyone knows where I can find a C&O Atlantic in HO scale, I would dearly love to know.

    Something different

That is definitely a really dull stretch. Recently up in Flagstaff I watched probably the most impressive train I've ever seen pass through downtown: 7 lead engines, 2 mid train helpers, 2 trailing helpers, and enough doublestacks that I lost count (well over 100). We get freights through 100...

    Heat in Garage

As another Arizonan, the garage layout can be a tremendous pain in the summer from may-august, but the rest of the year its actually quite nice. And since we have pretty low humidity most of the year, I never had much trouble with track buckling and other issues in the 3 years or so that my...

    Reminiscing-First Train Set

Yeah, trains aren't popular holiday gifts anymore. Its only a recent thing though. So many of my friends were into trains as kids just 15-20 years ago.

    Reminiscing-First Train Set

I was just thinking the other day about my very first train set. It was my 6th birthday. I got a Bachmann set with an 0-6-0 switcher, 4 cars, and a caboose. That locomotive ran for about two weeks before it died. sign1 But that was enough to get me hooked. I still have one of the cars that...

    4% Gradient, overkill?

A well weighted diesel engine could pull 5 or 6 cars up a 4% grade. But I'm in HO scale and its a lot easier for us to add a little extra weight to our engines. Squidbait is right though, if those old department store sets could handle it with their rubber band drives and 2-wheel electrical...

    Impressive Layout

    Info Needed Regarding Sn2

Don't forget Lionel's original gauge, I think it was 2 7/8 inch track width.
