Actually you are right and wrong at the same time. The original 1977 Star Wars did indeed not have an episode number, however: "For the 1981 re-release of the film the subtitle A New Hope was added to the opening crawl, where it remains to this day."...

That's actually a quite nifty idea. There are a lot of descriptions for the same(and almost) things out there, greebling, layering, detailing etc. Would be nice to have a place where these are explained. :D
