Help with designing a new layout

Is 2x6 an absolute limit? I ask because I made a design a while back in 2.5x4.5, which is nearly the same square footage (11.25 sq. ft vs 12 sq. ft) with 5 industries, and interchange, and a small yard. It was designed to be run as a game (the yard was an inglenook sidings puzzle). I can...

    Tokyo offers women-only rail cars

Sounds like a return to the 19th Century, actually. In the 1870s-90s, there were 'Women only' passenger cars on most US railways

Seeking N Scale Building Heavy Layout (Town)

7x10? Do you have a whole (small) room? Or a corner of a larger area? with that size, you'll probably want to use an L-shaped or U-Shaped layout, but its a HUGE space for N scale (its equivelent to about 13x18-1/2 for HO). You might want to start with a smaller 2x4, 3x6, or door-sized...

    Adding a yard and stuff

EZ: One more thing! (as Uncle would say) Don't make a huge yard just to have a huge yard. make sure the yard looks right for your industries. Storage tracks for more trains is one thing. But a 'working yard' should be just big enough to cary all the trains to run your industries if you...

Perils and pitfalls... yeah, I'm a newbie.

Lee: Its fine. Remember, in the long run, Model Trains are just toys for very big boys :) Run it how you like it.

College student needs small layout ideas

I built a travk in 4.5x2.5 in N-scale that fits in my dorm, with a yard, interchange, not-an-oval loop, bridge, and 5 industries:

    Taking the Plunge...Finally

I agree with Tad. Just Use an actual hollow-core door. You can add handles on the sides for portability

    My Track Plan

besides, most old west trains weren't too long, a 'reverse' move would actually be pretty typical for the time. (but then, so was the dreaded 'Cornfield Meet'

    Layout Critique/Questions

What I do: I set up a list of things I want. For example: I wanted a loop for constant running, but not a simple, boring oval. I wanted a small yard and industries to run switching, and I wanted 'replay' value, so that the same buildings didn't always get the same cars. I built my...

2'x6' a Micro? in N thats pretty big! this is 2.5x4.5, in 2x6 the yard can be moved inside the main track and the curves can be stretched out a bit. should be more intereesting. Here's the 2x6 varient

    Layout Woes

this 32x64 varient might be something to work with. Take out the short straight in the curve sections and adding two or three straights in the straight section should make it work for a 30x80 door

    Layout Woes

My only problem with the use-the-door-to-the-fullest trackplan is its TOO MUCH TRACK. there is almost no room left over for scenery and buildings. I do like the Compact trackplan, which fits in 2x4 and manages a lot better to handle scenery:

    Layout Woes

A few trackplan Ideas This is the door Layout I created. Its a long run (almost 2 scale miles of track) It doesn't have a yard, but one could be added. The main run is a double-folded dogbone. a mountain on the left and a city on the right make for a very appalachian scene...
