    scratchbuilding 84 lumber

The 84 Lumber near me (Loveland, OH) still has an active siding. They share the siding with a company that specializes in brick, block and rock. There are often cars at both loading docks.

DCC and Bachmann Spec F7 A/B

The loco's are from the most recent batch from Bachmann. I have an older standard Bachmann F7 (at least 5 years old) that has the same style frame. As far as I can tell, the difference between the two is much better printing/paintjob and the 5 pole motor vs. the 3 pole in the standard. As far...

    noob in need of help

I will second NYCNewbies statements. I really can's stand people generalizing about the quality of a product from one bad experience. Everybody has their own level of quality that satisfies them. What a die hard, long time model railroader, thinks is junk, can be perfectly fine for a new...

DCC and Bachmann Spec F7 A/B

There is no need for the Aztec frames, the modifications are not hard to do at all. It takes about 10 minutes with a dremel tool to get them ready. I have completed the B Unit and will try to take pictures when I do the A for a quick tutorial. The conversion can be done completely with a...

DCC and Bachmann Spec F7 A/B

Does anybody have any links or suggestions to installing DCC decoders in the Bachmann F7 A/B sets? It looks a decoder will just fit between the top of the frame and the shell but I think I am going to have to do a little milling to get some extra space. I also need to modify the frames to...

Rolling stock - is there a front and rear end?

I searched all over the forum for an answer to this with no luck so I thought I would ask. It is just an odd question that I haven't really seen any good images that support the answer. When trains are assembled in a yard, are the cars considered to have a front and back? Is the brake wheel...

    Radius info

I believe the siding that runs around the outside ended up at a 4% grade. The little 0-6-0 with traction tires can manage 3 Atlas Fishbelly Hoppers backing up the grade. It can handle 5 Micro Trains 2 bay hoppers since they are considerably lighter than the Atlas cars. Some of the other engines...

    Radius info

For reference the Bachmann 0-6-0 Switcher works fine on a 6" radius. Same holds true for a Bachmann F7 and LifeLike SW8. I have also ran a Rivarossi 4-6-2 Pacific on the 6" radius with no problems. More information and picutres of the layout I am working on in this thread post -...

Siding, Can't Figure out Proper Pieces

It is not possible using #6 turnouts because they don't have a piece of sectional track that matches the degree of radius in the turnout but with standard (#4) turnouts it is not too hard. This describes the siding: #4 Turnout - 1 1/4" straight - 19" radius (comes with switch) - 5" straight -...

    how to lay flextrak

extra7000 - Thanks. It is mainly something to build for experimenting and learning different techniques before I start on my primary layout. I am building this to fit in a display case at the hobbyshop that I work part time at. It is in two modules that will bolt together so it is easier to get...

    how to lay flextrak

I will second SD90's suggestion for contact cement. I however used a different product that makes it go a little quicker but it is probably more expensive in the long run. Hit the local craft store and look a product called UHU Creativ'. It comes in a tube and they have different versions for...

Is there a way to slow Con-Cor PA's?

They are the ConCor PA's. Just older units. After comparing them to other loco's I have. They are not as off speed as I thought. They are comparable to the Model Power USRA Pacific and Mikado that I have. It is just that the Bachmanns are geared so much lower than everything else.

N Scale Brands - what do you think?

I am just getting back in after 20 years so I can really only give opinions on loco's and rolling stock as they run around my test track (Bachman EZ track 11" radius) till I am ready to start building. I work part time at a shop that specializes in RC cars and planes so most of my purchases have...

    N scale layout for review

That is my plan exactly for the grades. The main line crossing area is the base grade, the loop to the left is below grade and the double mainline that runs across the back will go above grade. If things work out, I may run a staging yard off of the lower loop on the left under the main layout...

    N scale layout for review

Thank for the comments. I know about the reverse loops, they are there intentionally. I wanted some way to turn the train around to switch between lines without backing through the siding above the crossing. The reverse sections might be a bit tougher to wire but it can be accomplished with...

Is there a way to slow Con-Cor PA's?

I have been jumping back into N gauge with both feet over the past month or so, accumulating loco's and rolling stock to start a layout this fall. In one of my ebay purchases, which seems like it is just about the only way to get B&O passenger and freight cars anymore, I ended up with a Con-Cor...

    N scale layout for review

I'm making a return to model railroading after about a 20 year hiatus. This was sparked by my 11 month old son's facination with trains and a trip to the local historical society. I didn't realize how much the railway had impacted our town in its early years. Where there is one line that runs...
