    My retirement presents

Congrats on the retirement and presents. That steam engine takes me back about 35 or so years. My little brother had one. Used to use sterno to heat the water. Was pretty cool. Have fun with it. :)

    So what is "narrow?"

In Japan one metre is 'standard' and the bullet train uses 'broad gauge' which is what we call standard here. They are slowly changing most of over to our gauge so soon their 'broad' will become their 'standard. Kind of funny if you think about it :)

    locomotives running on 15" track

My shay does 12 inch radius with slippage and prefers 15 inches. The 0-4-0 porter I have can do 12 EASILY and has done 9 inches [or was it 8, check my website] with slippage. It all depends on the wheelbase. Forneys prefer 22 inches according to someone on another forum. So it depends how big...

    A real challenge to me.

Gil it does not work like Wahl oil does. Although it is called 'oil' I don't think it is like other oils because it seems to be the only 'oil' that does what it does. There is just something about Wahl oil that simply works. Don't assume that just because the word oil is in the name that other...

Don't laugh too hard...It's my first attempt!

I hope that your next mine is a great one. I am glad you are finding time to enjoy this hobby again. Take the time to look for what you want and make the "looking" part of the hobby. Some people think that shopping etc is a pain, but if you think of it, it is really just one more facet of the...

Real railroad workers & model railroading?

My dad was a brakeman when they still had steam engines :D Also my uncle was an engineer for CN till he died a few years ago. I worked once giving out food to rail gangs off of the side of a boxcar. But technically I know very little about real ones. I do model RRing and that's all I do and...

    In need of some help.

I have 2 bread knives. One very rigid and one very flexible. My sweetie 'let' me have them. The other one is touched [for model use] on pain of ... well pain LOL :D Anyhow, I have not used a hot wire, but even so. I have found nothing better then a serrated bread knife for cutting foam. I hope...

    Questions.....

2slim, I know this is late, however I seen the cars you mentioned in a book from the library about logging railroads on Vancouver Island [here on the west end of Canada.] I 'think' it was called "Logging by rail". But don't quote me :) I hope that helps :)

derailing is getting the best of me

Just an idea but.... Did all these problems start as the summer came? Might just be the rails are changing due to heat [or cold in the winter] and the slight change is causing the problems. Like I said, just an idea. I know one day a part of my layout actually popped once as it was in the sun...
