I solder every "section" to feeder wires. A "section" can be any length up to and including 3 - three foot pieces for a total of nine feet. I only have problems when extremes of temperature happen. But the rails change no matter what length when the temp goes nuts [as it did last spring for us...
Hey Josh, I am not sure how high end you wanna go but google has 'sketchup' which is a low end cad program.
Would mostly be used for anything 3d as in buildings. No idea how it would work for trains though.

I finally broke down and bought a cheap [really cheap, 8 bucks] air brush. I am now looking into getting a very quiet compressor if one exists.
It only needs to be between 15 and 35 PSI.

Believe it or not I use one of only two things. For paint and white glue type things I use a piece of basswood. Generally a 4 inch long 1/4 inch thick piece I rub along the top of each rail.
For crazy glue or hard like things I use a woman nail file. You know that ones made of stiff paper that...
