    Marker Lights

Recently there was an article in one of the mags (MR??) where they used a little battery (watch/calculator type) to for something like this. The neat thing I remember is that the caboose's smoke jack was connected to an on/off push button switch so you could turn the lights on and off.

    Muir Sawmill Plans needed

Hey Andrew - According to the link below, you might be able to get the instructions from NMRA (drill "up" from the page). I've never tried it, let us know what they say. Bill K http://www.nmra.org/library/Walthers.html

    $50 HO Box Car?

As long as the seller's descriptions are not misleading, I have no problem with what they're doing.

    Clamps

I've seen something similar to this commercially available, but shouldn't be too hard to home-brew: 1. Take two pieces of right-angle material (steel, aluminum, brass?), both about 2" longer than what they'll be clamping. 2. Except for 1" at each end, remove enough material at the angle to...

Our local weatherman forecast a 'trace' of snow overnight - there's about 3" of trace out there so far!

    cardstock truck/trailers

Looks like a good start, Ed. Q: What about the wheels/tires? Seems they might be a little hard to make look realistic w/cardstock. Maybe we need to get out the old Hot Wheels cars for parts!

    Track Planning Software

I gave up on RTS, mostly due to the flextrack tool. I use a cheap CAD program, QuickCAD from AutoDesk, that I got for around $25 at Menard's. There's a learning curve with it, especially if you've never done drafting before, and since it's not designed specifically for model RRs you have to...

    Idea

Fiberglass, I assume? Might help, but ... What about all the holes that get drilled through the plywood for wiring or whatever? Would they nullify the effect? Would it make it harder to drill the holes or to run the wiring through them? It could be that the expansion/contraction is caused...

    Question About Soldering Irons

Tom - As for size, it's like RS said, kinda depends on what you'll be using it for. It's probably better to be a little too big than too small, since the higher the wattage, the faster the joint will reach temperature and the less chance of the heating spreading to where you don't want it...

    Creative track plan suggestions needed

For what is basically a 42 X 2 ft layout, I'd just go with a loop-to-loop to keep things simple. Another, more complex, alternative might be to stack things up, i.e one shelf over another (just on the 21 ft section?). You should have enough length available to avoid too steep of grades to...

    Graph Paper Generator

Most computers have a spreadsheet of some kind on them, which is an easy way to make a simple grid. You can set the size of the squares and the thickness of the lines as you want.
