    Question......

I go to new posts because I've theoretically read everything I was interested in the last time, so I want to see what is new. Sometimes a thread will be of interest to me even if it's the wrong guage or something I would not look at normally. I'm another Newbee who didn't even realize that...

New HO layout items came in today!! Like X-mas

It looks great. I buy things the same way. I buy clothes out of season for next year, and bulk buy everything I can to save money (you're going to use it sooner or later). With just getting back into HO again, I know what I want eventually, and try to buy it like you did. I've been buying...

What Train or Railroad are You?

I'm the Ghost Train. Which means what? Maybe I'll never be operational, but it will be fun to follow the prototype.

    Operations question

Given that model railroading is selective compression (unless your layout is measured in acres) and that we are always compressing buildings, mountains, and distances between cities, why can't you selectively compress your unit trains into blocks of 8 or 12 so that you can easily handle them on...

    Some Observations on the Industry

This is the most enjoyable thread I have seen on the Gauge. You have all said everything I have been thinking, and very eloquently at that.

    Scenic Ridge

I bought the "City & Industry Building Set" which goes with the "Grand Valley" at a train show this summer for $150.00. It's 15 DPM based buildings with some different decals and accessories thrown in. I thought it was a good (not great) deal and it will go up in my mountain module which looks...

Is N and HO layout taboo?

Model Railroader Magazine had an issue a while back showing a club with a large layout, having O, S, and HO all together, and even one scene with all three guages passing in front of the passenger station. O in foreground, S in the middle, and HO by the station.

    Trains surging through switch tracks

Hi, I couldn't sleep thinking about your problem and was going to say pretty much what ezdays said. When you do your tests with a volt meter, if it is not a center zero meter, run two tests and reverse your polarity the second time. If you don't have a volt meter, you could use a continuity...

    Trains surging through switch tracks

Hi, I don't know anything for certain, but I have a guess as to what is happening. My guess is that your transformer has a center tap where it is splitting out the AC voltage into a positive portion for one side and a negative portion for the other side, and when your loco crosses so that...

    air brakes

If you're interested in the brakes for today's high speed trains -- look up KNOOR brakes on your search engine. The company is located in Westminster MD.

    Opinions sought

As I remember it, AHM - ASSOCITATED hobby manufacturers - was formed as a conglomerate to import European manufacturers products into the US. IHC - INTERNATIONAL hobby corporation - is an outgrowth (reorganization ??) of that company. Rivarossi is one of the manufacturers whose products are...

What Do You Do If You Have No Sheet Of Wood

Hi I'm sure you have a million questions about what you're going to do. I have a million questions about your questions. I don't know anything about N scale, but: Why are you worried about decoders? If you are not going to use them, then your HO operation is exactly the same as an N scale...

    coupler question..

I think E-Z mate couplers are McHenry's under liscense to Bachmann. When KaDee had the sole patent they would not liscense them to loco manufacturers, or the manufacturers would not pay the KaDee price. Now with competition the prices are coming down. I am converting my couplers to McHenry...

    Your Favorite HO Scale Manufacturer?

Hi, I already voted once (for Bachmann) and since that time I have bought 4 diesels, with 8-wheel drive, with 8-wheel pickup, with a super solid tracking effort (no wobble like other cheapies), and with ---DCC--- on board, ready to go, for the incredible low price of $29.99 each. Two of the...

    Erie Camelbacks

Model Railroader Mag Feb 1971 page 40 has "Trackside Photos" of an 0-8-8-0 Camelback made by a man in San Antonio Texas of brass and parts from Cal-Scale and Kemtron. It weights 1.5 lbs, has pulled eight cars up a 6% grade, can climb a 12% by itself, and operate on #4 turnouts. Looks impressive!!!

    New plans.

Hi, One thing that you may have missed is that you HAVE a switchback right now. When your train comes up to the second level, it must stop, and reverse itself to get to the rest of your layout. Also the maximum length of the trains is limited by the length of that siding. It looks like your...

    United Scale/A&LM/Fujiyama/Tenshodo Trains

Hi, good luck with your selling, it looks like you have great stuff there. As many people are going to point out, the locomotive is made from "brass", but the railroad it was modeled after is the "Nickle Plate Railroad", like B&O, UP, SanteFe, etc. I am interested in filling my library of...

Rolling stock & a Big Boy

Hi, just leafed thru back issues of Mags looking for 4-6+6-4's or 4-6-6-4's as they were then known. Trains Mag Nov 1992 shows 3985 flanked by smooth side excursion/business car fleet at the Cheyenne Wyoming train shops. So that's what it's pulling now. Trains Mag Oct 1982 shows overhead of...

Rolling stock & a Big Boy

I just read a train magazine (don't know which one MR,RMC,Trains,Railfan, etc) don't know which year (60's thru present), but I do know it mentioned that up until 1960, approximately 1/2 the passanger cars on the rosters of U.S. railroads were heavyweight. By 1970 only a small percentage (10 or...

    HO Scale looking to expand

If you don't mind widening the tunnels for two trains, you have a very easy solution for getting a second (continuous) loop. The spur at the bottom of your layout can be turned into a loop, 6 18" curve tracks (creating a new tunnel through the mountain), 4 straight sections coming back to the...
