Resurrecting a dead layout 30 years later

If you add a third track coming down the left side from the mountain, you can have one train on a short loop (track 2 with ties drawn in) and your main train on a path through your layout hitting all the spots. The main "A" train could go counterclockwise from the front center of the layout...

Resurrecting a dead layout 30 years later

Hi, Does your husband know that you are the perfect wife? Your layout looks great, however I can see what you mean by spending too much time operating it because of reversing loops and switching all the time. You appearently have a method of hooking up one large looped layout, but I have a...

    Life-like or Bachmann train set?

Model Railroader has a special issue "Model Trains - step by step". It is perfect for you and ALL nubees, answering your questions about track. There is one section that lists all the track available - by manufacturer and by gauge. It also has full page ads for Kato Unitrack, Atlas True-Track...

    Life-like or Bachmann train set?

One of your questions was about the accessories running with other sets. If you get a crossing gate, or a dump/loader structure, and it has the track built into it, if that track is the manufacturer's special all-in-one track, then it will not hookup to any track from any other manufacturer...

    Please help educate a newbie.

5X9 is better than 4x8 because you can more effectively use 22' radius curves. when you look at the 4x8 layouts, you can increase the curves, put in more double mainlines or passing sidings, or have more room for scenery.

    Life-like or Bachmann train set?

HO trains run on HO track. All HO trains run on all HO track. If you buy a "toy" set it will contain code 100 rail which measures how "tall" the nickle silver railheads are above the ties. The rail will be either standard Atlas type with no roadbed attached, or it will be one of the...

    Smaller HO Scale Suggestions?

Everyone's giving you good suggestions, but if you diagramed the room size and layout area they could help you better, and maybe offer some ideas for the shape of your layout. I am building a module approximately your size which is downtown Baltimore in the 50's with emphasis on B&O industrial...

    Weathering question

Model Railroader Magazine had a special issue magazine released in August called "Modeling Railroads of the 1950s". It had a section devoted to weathering diesels and steam locomotives, including what color to make the mud that splatters on the trucks. How much you weather is entirely up to...

    Technical Lighting Question

I recently bought my first (test) string of Christmas tree lights specifically for lighting houses. It was 100 lights for $4.00, wired in series - one goes out, they all go out. But the string had three wires on it, the two wires without lights passed the current to the next string of lights...

    switchers

Beautiful photos. They really show the difference between out-of-the-box and highly weathered. What you say about the tender pickup makes sense to me. I plan to eventually modify ALL my tenders for pickup from both rails if possible, and make the connectors uniform so I can switch tenders...

    Newbie Layout Questions

If you're using 9" sectional track either for the design program or for laying it on the layout, you can figure 12X9=108, so count 12 pieces of sectional track from the overpass to the underpass for your 100". A 2 inch rise (in N gauge) is 2%, or if you're working in HO, the 4" rise is 4%. I'm...

    Setting the Scene

The domed green tree cost $4.50 to make, the orange/yellow trees cost 20 cents apiece, actually 5 for $1.00, because those plants were 80% off. I also have other types of trees that I can make very cheaply.

    Setting the Scene

Hi, I'm going to model the autumn a little southwest of you. I plane to have mostly green trees with the yellows and oranges scattered throughout, just like the photos posted above. Today I found a great place to get my fall trees. I went to JoAnn Fabric and craft shops. They have the fall...

    Bachmann DEAL!!...Maitence question.

You're right, you got one of the 0-6-0/2-6-0/2-6-2 locos, and the way the front truck looks, it could be factory installed, but I don't think they have produced that model (if ever) in a long time. The superstructure is obviously the same and the position of the drivers is also the same. You...

    Bachmann DEAL!!...Maitence question.

The first three locos are ones that Bachmann has been selling for years and years, and years..... you get the picture. I have One of each of them, they are identical. If you look at the bells and whistles and domes and piping and lights. One mold for all three types. They go for less than...

    Spectrum 2-8-0 Decoder Buzzing

I don't currently have DCC so I know nothing about it, but is it possible that something is binding up in your loco, and the motor is fighting to overcome it, and when the voltage/current is high enough, the motor wins out and the binding is not a problem anymore? PS. I will be buying the...

The Cat came back..........and she brought her camera

Great modeling, great photography. The only way you know is isn't real is that they didn't have digital cameras way back then.
