    Returning to the hobby.

Over here I pay $8.00 for Atlas turnouts at M.B.Kleins, but they are $12 to $18 at other stores. The Peco I get from Kleins are usually $16 to $18. I would guess that Peco is cheaper in UK than Atlas?

    car road

Hi, This info is from an American perspective. The width of car axles is approximately the same as the width of your rails (true in Ngauge, or HO, or S, or O, or G). A one lane country dirt road is approximately (as a minimum) the width of your track and ties. A two lane country dirt road is...

Yard that needs to curve 90 degrees

You currently have two staging areas (fiddle yards), one at each end of your layout. That is a great idea. Putting a single switch yard in the middle (24' section) and having industries at the edges is also a great idea, and that is probably what I would do. But whatever you decide, you can...

    Returning to the hobby.

Good luck with your layout, keep us posted as you go along. I'm certain that many of the members who have built shelf layouts and multi-level layouts can give you good advice. You said you like to cut and fit the track in place as you go along, which is what I do. Do yourself a favor and buy a...

N scale building collection for sale

You should be able to get the pricing for the structures from a Walthers catalog. That would give you a ballpark figure for the absolute max you could sell them for including shipping. Some of those structures will be difficult to ship without breaking. If they were HO I would drive to your...

    Where to buy styrofoam?

When I go to the recycling dump to drop off my newspapers, I frequently pick up styrofoam (usually white beaded stuff) when the workers are not looking. Usually I return with more than I took.

    Returning to the hobby.

Hi, Your layout looks great. It's fantastic that you can get such a long run in a relatively small room. Great design ideas. The reference for the turntable was just to point out that you had a 9" in the plan, and were talking about a 22" and that I thought it would be too large for your...

    My layout Progress

Your layout looks great. With a 5% grade helper locomotives would certainly be appropriate, and can add some operational considerations to your sessions. Do you have access to all areas of the layout? Some of your tunnel areas look to be unreachable (pun intended).

    Returning to the hobby.

I have a Bachmann 484 Niagra which negotiaed 18" curves after I filed off some of the detail underneath the front of the loco. You'll have to do the same, but it will work. Your turntable shown in the layout is 9" in diameter, or 3/4 one of your 12" squares. A 22" turntable would be as long...

Yard that needs to curve 90 degrees

I think you want to leave the incoming train on track 2, rather than foul the mainline. I would also make your second switch a double slip switch, and extend a lead track up the layout for the switcher to use to further avoid fouling the main. The switcher would then set out the cars on tracks...

    DCC and DC

Every Bachmann Locomotive I have bought that is DCC equiped has been run on my DC test tracks. When you apply a standard (DC) power source to the track, they all operate as DC locos, the same as any other locomotive. At the last train show I attended, the club members operating their modular...

    I'm just brilliant!!

I dread the day that will happen to me. My eyes are not good enough, probably will have to junk it, or totally redo it with bigger wires.

    with or without dock?

You definitely need the bottoms of the truck beds to line up with the bottoms of the doors. Your first way with no basement is not realistic unless you have a ramp dug out of the ground to slope the back of the trailer down to the right height (as has been mentioned). Your first arrangement is...

Designing a Logo for the W&N

I was just looking through "Trains" July 2001 issue, and they featured the Wheeling and Lake Erie Railroad which interconnects with your railroad. When I saw the map, I thought it was similar trackage to yours, but the W&LE is east of you, going from Toledo to Hagerstown (with trackage rights)...

    How are these? Any suggestions?

You have an operational problem with this layout. You can make up multiple trains in the yard area, and they can travel to the loops, but there is no way back. You need to flip the spurs and the loops upside down, so that the trains travel from the lower left to the upper right of the spurs...

    Passenger Operations?

For your head end cars don't forget REA (Railroad Express Agency) with cars appropriate for any of your passenger runs. If you are going through rural areas, the milk reefer could also be picked up in the morning, and returned empty later in the day. Reefers could also be added on if there...

    A Fond Farewell

In this world there are many things which go to the scrap heap before anyone realizes that they are irreplaceable treasures - witness all of the former railroad rolling stock that we would all like to be able to see and enjoy today. What you have done is to place the treasures that Robin...

    Diesel sound - whad'ya think?

Hi, I'm new to DCC, don't have any sound, haven't yet hooked up my HO DCC yet, but everythings ready to go and I've looked at the video a few times including twice with the DCC controller in my hands. (I bought the Bachmann cheapie system just to see if I liked it) If the sound unit is in with...

    Model Railroader Magazine

I like Model Railroader Magazine. I like the adds because occasionally I buy something from them, and they give me an idea of the going rate for products. Once the adds are out of date, I tear out the pages with only adds on them and throw them away, and save the rest of the mag. I think they...
