    Digitrax Back-EMF

I'm no expert, but.....Back EMF is a feature of the decoder which allows it to monitor motor speed and automatically compensate power to the motor to maintain a constant speed. What you want to achieve is controlled by the variable VStart, which is CV #3.

Oldies but Goodies. The Old Stuff.

Some Oldies.... OK...Here's a couple of the oldies that were first purchased by my ol' man waayyy back in 1950-51 +/-, and were the first "consist" we had until the early 60's when we started a layout. All of these are Athearn metal kits, with the exception of the hopper, which is a Varney...

Steve Austin's On30 Elkhorn Iron & Timber Co.

Some incredible stuff here....Not a piece of "normal" rolling stock anywhere....I really got a kick out of THE SAW hanging on a nail, through the CUTOUT in the handle...!!!! Heck...I couldn't make the cutout on a full size saw...never mind one in O scale.....

    n scale newbie lighting question

The battery pack & grain of wheat/rice bulbs is your best bet. Simple, and you can dim the lights to a tolerable level, as on straight 12 volts, they shine like the alien space craft in "Close Encounters..". Just wire the lights up to the variable DC output (what would be used for the track) and...

    Taking the plunge to DCC

So much the better....Like NKP says...current draw shouldn't be much of a concern, and you can always cut power to a parked loco, just to lower the current draw, and to not have a decoder always on....

    This is why I quit.

I too migrated to the "New Gauge"...but that doen't mean I quit this one. There are many old friends here, and I enjoy seeing new faces showing up here as well....The mods that quit moderating here did so due (as I understand it..) because there existed "irreconcilable" differences with...

    Taking the plunge to DCC

Hi....That's a good step you're taking, and I'm sure you'll enjoy running your "lash-ups" ( I know I do...and I have only one....). I wouldn't be in too great a hurry to re-wire the layout right off the bat. It'll work just as it is, just set your block switches to the position of one of your DC...

Come on back to the caboose and get a cup of coffee [or sweet ice tea] - Part VII

Jeffrey...You might want to look into PeoplePC.com's DSL service. I pay $29.95/month for it. I don't know what the speed rating is, but it is pretty fast...Pages full of train pictures load up in a few seconds....

    dual operation of turnouts

Hi...If you're using a DPDT switch now, you could use a DPDT-Momentary contact-Center Off switch at both locations to throw the turnout. I use these to power my turntables, and you need to hold the switch in the desired position for as long as the machine takes to throw the turnout. The center...

    Bus Wiring for DCC

Soldering the rail joiners to the track, and putting feeds at every track section would be redundant. Generally feeders are soldered to the tracks to avoid having to solder the rail joiners, which allows for track expansion and contraction with weather changes. I think most people do a mix of...

AC Gilbert 0-6-0s repairing a few.

WoW...That's a labor of love..... I have an old 0-8-0, mid- 50's vintage still in good running condition, although it starts slowing down after a little while of chuffin' along. What might be the cause of this..? I'd like to get it running "as good as new" again....

  19. S

    Bus Wiring for DCC

Ok....Generally feeders from the bus to the tracks are placed on each individual piece of track to avoid relying just on the rail joiners to conduct the electricity. So if you've used 3 foot sections of track (flextrack) you would have feeders every three feet (+/-). If you are using...

OK...That proves you're certifiably insane.... Never in a gagillion years would I attempt anything like that....Just for reference, take a pic of your tongs next to an object of known size...I don't think I could draw anything that small...Much less cut it out & make it look like the...
