Do your guests put their drinks on the layout?

I have to admit this is a neat idea, but remember that accidents happen and in the case of model railroading - liquids and models do not always mix. JD

Designing A Layout Based On A Single Industry

Good point. Kind of like a car repair facility. JD

    What do you do?

As for work, I conduct insurance fraud investigations which is a never-ending battle. Weekends are for field trialing, hunting, railfanning and model railroading or doing what my wife tells me to do. JD

Designing A Layout Based On A Single Industry

I obviously need to get out more often or move to another part of California where I can see such movements. Regardless, in context with this thread it would make for a unique modeling opportunity. JD Caterpillar still ships by rail, and I think most heavy equipment manufacturers ship by...

Designing A Layout Based On A Single Industry

I just learned something new. I did not know there were any large equipment manufacturers that still shipped by rail. JD

Designing A Layout Based On A Single Industry

Another possibility and one that would require some really difficult structure building would be to do a chemical plant ie: Dow, Dupont etc. Dow Chemical in Pittsburg is a huge facility with 40-50 tank cars and their own switching engine. JD

Is the Real Thing getting, well, blah?

I would have to agree with this statement. I know it makes for boring railfanning and modeling modern era locomotives but what else can a capitalistic society do. JD

New train room - need ideas!

Keep in mind that whatever you do that access to the water softener and furnace is a on-going maintenance issue and your benchwork will need to allow flexibility. JD

    Layout Comments Please

I am not technical myself, but this looks to be a two-level layouy and if so where is the helix? JD - ignorant of many things including model railroading

Finally, the "Pictures at 11:00" or quick, Noah, get the boat...

What impresses me is the depiction of the water flowing past/around the concrete pilings. The ripple effect both upstream and downstream is something that demonstrably adds to the realism of the overall concept. JD

    Duckunders are evil.

I like the "geezer slider" concept. While I am not there just yet, I will keep the idea in mind for when I am - and like we all will be<g> JD

    Ideas

MasonJar hit the nail on the head. You need to know you are going and want to accomplish before you decide on a specific track plan. It has taken me three years to develope a plan that encompasses a modern era industrial complex along with a local yard that I can accept and be happy with...
