Athearn AC4400 very noisy on DCC

I've ran into the same problem with quite a few of them recently. I isolated 2 with the motors coming apart (copper clip that holds the motor together on top and bottom) and 3 that had poor lubrication in the trucks. A lil lube, and verification of the motors and all was well.:thumb:

    New model railroaders?

Yes sir, they do. The drive mechanism is so sensitive to slow speed, the detail work is excellent also.:thumb: As soon as they release an NS Gevo, gonna get a couple:thumb: :thumb:

    New model railroaders?

I'm with Miles, Im almost 40, and have never seen an operational steam engine in my life, but I do own a few; BIg Boy, Challenger, a couple of 4-8-4 mountains, a couple of Mikado's, and will use them on my layout for mainly passenger excursions. The closest I have come to a real one, was one...

    New engines hit the rails!

That IHC has an universal coupler on the rear, in that it will match up with horn-hook or KD's. I'm glad you and your Grandson are enjoying them Rick:thumb: :thumb:

    ho track plan for 96" x 112"

I like it, but I will use a lil variation of it: Will move the cross under to lower wall, add a storage yard on the lower level, and will make a section of it lift out (how? I dont know yet) I'm also going to add a diesel and steam service areas (somewhere, just not quite sure yet):thumb:

    DCC'ing old Athearn units appreciated

Heres a wiring diagram straight from the Lenz LE1000w, any other wires you have beyond these are for other functions (aka directional lighting, ditch, mars,....)

    DCC'ing old Athearn units appreciated

That is just about right, except the line running from the DCC board to top of motor is Orange not yellow. If you want to use the existing light in the Athearn unit, most decoders will work if you tie the white wire to the back of the light, at the copper strip that normally rests on top of the...

    DCC'ing old Athearn units appreciated

Heres a suggestion: while your inside and have taken the motor out of the engine, take a lil lube and apply to the worm gears and inside the trucks to the gears in there. Theres nothing worse than gettin it all wired up and put back together and detailed completely, and then a few days later...
