March 07 photo competition: trains aren't the only way to fly

Ok, the K&W construction co, under contract from the new layout owner, loaded up all their New CAT equipment on flatcars, along with a work trailer, and headed towards an unfinished area of the layout . It seems the owner has been slow at finishing grading and laying ballast and track.sign1 On a...

    Nightmare Experience With Wholesale Trains

Hehe, good luck trying to get model railroader to drop Athearn, they usually have 1+ full page adds monthly. But I will say this much, there are alot of people who see this site, either by searching thru their fav search engines, or by just knowing its here, and word of mouth on here is almost...

    Programming

CV = Configuration Value ie is the data for a certain register to react the way you want it to; you would program certain cv's to respond to when you push the "F2" button, the ditch lights would correspond to flashing alternately. I did install an A6X in my Genesis Sd70m and had to setup 2...

A Flextrack howto in the academy ?

What you've got to remember Andrew is that you and I are talking from experience with laying flex. This might be going in the Academy for new hobbiest to learn from. If you take 6 ties out of joint of flex and then bend to desired curve, it will kink and be out of gauge. Your looking at 1 3/4" ~...

A Flextrack howto in the academy ?

I'm glad you found that Pdf, and its free! Although, I'd have to argue with it. It says to remove 3 ties from the end of each piece for curves. Now you have a section of track, 6 ties long with soldered rail joiners, with nothing to keep it in gauge. It says that he removes the ties first and...

    locomotive current draw

The driveline should slip before burning out the motor, unless you have traction tires on it, but it would still slip.:thumb:

A Flextrack howto in the academy ?

For $8.95, you can download it. I beleive info such as that should be public knowledge. We pay high enough prices for the items we get, $100 for a loco, $100 for a set of freight cars, $200+ for track, $100+ for scenery and buildings, $150+ for DCC setup, + benchwork. Information should be FREE...

    Cheap but decent rolling stock

Accurail kits are nice but time consuming (open autoracks). The Life Like cheapy rtr cars are ok if you take the time and convert them to body-mount kadees. Athearn BB kits are excellent also. Bachmann has improved over the past few years, to putting body mounted couplers. Broadway Limited is a...

    Cheap but decent rolling stock

Gary beat me to it.sign1 RTR means "Ready To Run", not in kit form. Most RTR's cost considerably more than the kit of the same model. In kit form, you can have the chance to do a lil kitbashing, before the finished product goes to rail.:thumb:

    4x8 figure 8 crossing

I see 6 probs with the diagram: 1-4: you have to include the 1/3 18" radius pieces when using the switches to complete a circle 5-6: must remove the small straight pieces from the middle of the loops on the figure 8 Eric:thumb:

    track laying questions

I use an xacto to shave down the spike heads and get under the rail. It may take a little longer to do it this way, but the visual effect is worth it.:thumb:

    track laying questions

Dont remove the ties, just trim the opposing spike heads so the joiner can slide where it needs to. When I lay my flex, I trim nothing but the spike heads. I do this to avoid the "sectional track" look. I do even it up when I get to a switch. The most important thing to remember about flex is to...
