    Puddlejumper's (lack of) layout progress...

Ya, my plan is to put some weight in the boiler and hopefully these micro motors NKP told me about will work well. I guess you can tell I like to change things up, would have been easier to build 4 Bowser A5s then to rework 4 different units. Thanks Deano! I hope to add electrical pickup to...

Comparison of 4 of the A5s'. Left to right are Bowser, Gem, Mantua. On top in back is the John English boiler only. It will need a lot of work to bring it up to the same level of detail. I plan on using a Bowser mechanism for that boiler. Will post updates when I get some more work...

Ok, the good news is my Gem Models A5s arrived. The bad news, yes it runs like crap and can barely move it's own weight, let alone 1 freight car. It is VERY light, the Bowser, Mantua, John English shells (cast metal) weight more than the entire Gem Brass locomotive! Pix... So it appears...

    Freight Car Shells

Nice idea Russ. For the price of the parts you get some experience soldering, scratchbuilding, and several hoppers you can take pride in because YOU built them. This is why I spend more time looking through the scrap boxes at train shows than the new items ready to run. Dave

The way I heard it was they'd pull the big boy a little past the table, place angled blocks under the 3rd or 4th axle from the rear of the tender, then back up on the blocks, lifting the rear 3 or 4 axles up off the rails and allowing enough clearance underneathe to spin the table...

I looked into the coreles Fauhaber motors and it looks very interesting indeed! I am going to take some measurements of several of my 0-4-0 switchers that need repowering (I am an 0-4-0 fanatic LOL) and order some motors to do some experimenting. I have never repowered a loco before so any...

No, I bought the A5a already superdetailed. I love it! I will be doing the Bowser and John English A5s' to equal or exceed the detail level on that Mantua though. As for the motor, I have not heard about Faulhaber. I will look into them. If they are small enough to go into the boiler of...

I had heard that as well... Hey Deano, you have some really great models! You have so much UP stuff, was wondering if you had the Desert Storm SD40-2 or the "porch potty" SD40-2. I'm not a UP modeler but I have been tempted to get the Desert Storm camo SD40-2- it's just too cool! Dave

Yeah, the 3 AM hoppers came from Tony himself. Great guy, and I feel honored to have these hoppers for my layout. The A-5 is a Mantua, but the old open frame motor is really loud and jumpy. I am going to clean an lube it and see if it gets better. Otherwise i'll just throw a can motor in...

    Puddlejumper's (lack of) layout progress...

I thought I'd start a thread I can post to when some, ANY, progress is made on my layout. Well, technically I don't have a layout, I plan on building an around the walls shelf layout- much less elaborate than Josh's (trucklovers) amazing setup- but for now all I have is my 1'x6' inglenook...

    It's all about class.....

Would you believe there WAS a system for the Pennsy numbering? There was! The PRR used numbers by divisions. There was no rhyme or reason as far as wheel arrangement or class as far as numbering went, but there was division assignment. For example, PRR 10 was an A5 0-4-0, 11 was an L1 Mikdao...

No problem. If I see any conventionals, I'll grab em. If you don't still want them I could prolly use 'em too. Dave

    Looking for the Malibu Trucks

There are 9 of the Malibu trucks at my Wal-Mart, but I didn't buy them because they are ALL the single rear axle Volvo and Mercedes trucks. If you want them let me know and I'll pick them up Thursday, i'm sure they'll be there, they've been there for a couple months now. The Fords and...
