    Foot and 1/2 Gauge

A spring loaded switch. That was very common on park railroads with an "out and back" configuration. The engineer did not have to stop and throw the switch after making a turn thru the reverse loop. The weight of the loco and cars would hold the points over until the train passed and then the...

    Brass Sectional Track?

For years and and years brass track was the standard. It was cheap to make and had certain electrical properties that were suitable for HO trains. HO did not become popular until after WWII. Metals such as steel and aluminium that were used for larger scale train track were still in high demand...

Cleaning up (in more ways than one)

Don, Labelle synthetic oils and synthetic gear lube IMHO is the best going. Well stocked hobby shops usually have it but they are getting harder to find:eek: They work just fine on both plastic and metal. You don't want to use any petroleum based oil like 3 In One because they will soften any...

Cleaning up (in more ways than one)

Don, I would take the cars apart and remove the trucks if possible and clean them seperately. While you are at it pick up an NMRA N Scale gauge so you can check the gauge of the wheelsets. No doubt the wheels are gonna need cleaning too. The reason I say take them apart if you can is that water...

Cleaning up (in more ways than one)

Don, I don't see why you couldn't remove the shells and wash them off. You might want to use some kind of very mild detergent maybe like Ivory that doesn't have any harsh chemicals. It might be best to remove as much of the dust as possible with a soft bristle brush first though. I used to...

    Proto 2000 Electrical Question

Thanks for the information Shay and Jon. Shay, the shorting plug is in place but I didn't know what it was for. I'm betting that is where the problem is as I get no power to the motor and I'll bet that one or more of those pins are not making contact. I can "jumper" the motor to the trucks...

    Proto 2000 Electrical Question

The Robber Barron is baffled!!! My friend bought a Proto 2000 E8 from the LHS that doesn't know beans about trains. It was on sale for $30 bucks and there were no instructions in the box. It won't run. It has one of those simulated gyro-lites that does work. What is that massive curcuit...

    need help

Nothing Beats Pencil And Paper Hi Wilson, I hope that I'm not adding to your confusion but there is something that has been overlooked here. Percentage of grade is better calculated in inches rather than feet for modeling purposes. For example, a 3 inch rise of track in 100 inches of track run...

    WS plaster cloth/hydrocal fun

Hi David, Try adding a tablespoon of vinegar to the Hydrocal to retard it when you mix it up. That will usually buy you some drying time. I don't know what "light Hydrocal" is. All I've ever used was a dense heavy material that is so strong you can dance on it when its dry:D I would expect...

Gas stations in Colorado in 1925

Neil, I model Colorado in the early 30's. I don't ever recall seeing anything on what companies sold gas then or in your era. Its probably a good bet that it was Standard Oil though as they were one of the first commerical, nationwide marketers of gasoline. Some others that could be possible...
