    foam vs balsa?

Hi,zener. Maybe the supply difficulty (as others have reported) is your location. Passed the pink 2" in 4'x8' at Lowes here(Pittsburgh,Pa area) Friday. Maybe try their website...your branch may be able to get it. Best of luck with your project...we're all here to help, if needed. Bob C.

Theoretical size limit to rolling stock?

Hi, Kevin ! Just some observations...Newer power looks more massive for several reasons: the "Wide-cab is more imposing, larger (volume),placed higher and far forward, and full width to the nose; though the diesel is actually no larger, the auxiliary power/cooling/accessory/control/fuel systems...

    CSX...Please 'splain....

Hello, All. I can't completely wrap my head around the theory of all of this, but ran intermodal trains on NS from Pittsburgh (Conway Yard) to Harrisburg on the Pittsburgh Line (ex-CR/PC/PRR). In another discussion (on another Forum), calculated from personal observation that a 3000ton train...

    E.Suydam Kits

Hi,All. Built several of Suydam's card and metal buildings back in the '60s/'70s. The sawmill kit was a beauty, but mostly corrugated metal (believe it was "tin-plate" like tin cans), I don't remember ACC being around - used wood bracing and "GOO" to build the metal parts - wish I hadn't lost it...

Where to buy homasote in Toronto?

Hi, Rob. sounds like you're going through decisions of consequence I'll have to make, too (later). Not to confuse the issues, but saw this page last night - might have some relevance for you (or not). If you haven't seen it , enjoy ! Bob C. Layout Construction Journal

can you still do it the old way?

Pete - you should be rightly proud of that dandy piece of work - would probably cost $40 - $50 as a KIT now, with only half the satisfaction. Thanks for showing us! Bob C.

    Proper Terminology

Wow, that is one super model, but the control electronics package is probably the bulk of the price. Am I reading right, that they say the drive coould be used with other scales of tables ? Neat find, but not cheap. Thanks, Bob C.

    Long time no talk

OleIrish (Jim), Welcome (back)! With 52 years in the hobby, you've no doubt, got some knowledge, experience and viewpoints from which we all can learn. I'm still new here, and trying to get "off the dime" on my modelling, since retiring off the seat-box for PC/CR/NS - need all the inspiration and...

    Scratchbuilt factory

Thanks, Andrew ! Amazing what you can find when you're not really looking. Thought Val had probably seen it, but... , and thanks to your friend (B.V.V.) for a thorough and enlightening piece (in spite of my delay in getting to it). Bob C.

    Scratchbuilt factory

Hi, Val. Had been following your thread for some time, but just stumbled across article in June 2003 RMC on the Massey-Harris Market St. plant in Brantford. Have you seen this reference and would such info be helpful ? Bob C.

    Flatcar Brake Equipment

Xiong, Welcome to "The Gauge". Hope we are helping...Wayne,IMHO, has it right. Some few verticle-shaft non-power brake wheels are probably still in use on special service and MOW cars - I've used 'em, and they are a pain and(without the brake club) only marginally effective. The difficulty of...

    Freight car question

Wayne, thanks for the inspiration and how-to. It's especially welcome as you always seem to be saying, NOT "Look what I do.", but more "Look what can be done." - a talent and quality to add to the modelling you do so well. Bob C.

    50' boxcars with RS-3 and GP7/9 ?

Jacques, Don't see why you wouldn't be OK, unless your rigorously imitated prototype dumped all these locos very early. I hired on PC in 1974, and have run ALL those types with 50' and larger cars. Enjoy the 'cubes if you've got the room !!! Bob C.

    Signal Aspect Question

Larry, VERY cool with the signals and "Qualifying" trips. Neat to have the resources, and not impossible on a home layout, especially with PCs. The tough part would seem to be understanding prototype function and adapting it to our (necessarily) truncated acreage. As your club members learn, you...
