NTrak module, yet more eye candy

Love it! love the bridge especially. One bothersome point though... unless you toss a good bit of vegetation around, the bear is out of place. Bears don't do Southwestern canyons much, far more common in the canyons of the Rockies, Sierra Nevadas, Cascades, Sawtooth, etc.

    laying ballast

What about goobering up the rails? I've never ballasted, but it seems as though there's a potential problem to spraying with a glue/water solution: you'll goober the rails with the glue, which theoretically should lead to all sorts of conductivity issues. Am I imagining things?

    N scale club

Isn't New Jersey small enough that everything's in the area? ;) (says the dude living where its 150 miles to the next city with a population greater than 20,000!)

    Modern residential streets? How wide?

Aside from checking with your own zoning department, methinks that the Department of Transportation, as well as some of the urban planning think-tanks would have suggested standards.

Desert Mountains - N-Trak Module in progress

Roadrunner & Coyote Thanks guys. The Roadrunner is out there, but unfortunately, between being N-Scale and my lack of experience with the borrowed camera, he's kinda hard to see. :D Coyote is impatiently waiting at the freight terminal in the next town up the line for the track to be laid...

    Pouring "water"

speculation here... If you're going to "close" edge with clear plastic, I'd do a test first to make sure that the Envirotex doesn't attack it. While I'd be mighty surprised if it were to eat through 1/8" or 1/4" of Lexan, any attack could craze it pretty ugly. An option you might be able to...

    Construction Has Begun!!!

Hand saws Unless you've done a fair amount of work with handsaws, do yourself a big favor: do not get a Western style handsaw, rather, get yourself a Japanese style handsaw. The Western saw cuts on the PUSH stroke, the Japanese saw cuts on the PULL. For both, best results are accomplished...

    Construction Has Begun!!!

Tailed Apprentices need not apply! Agatheron, you can save yourself a bit of money, and build some skills while burning calories by getting yourself a Japanese style handsaw (crosscut, I believe) and an inexpensive miter box, probably a total of $30 (US, don't know how much Cdn). Additional...

Desert Mountains - N-Trak Module in progress

Another shot of main mountain... Aerial view of main mountain. The scenery is plaster soaked paper towels over beercooler EPS foam. All the plaster was tinted with craft paints, and I put additional plaster where I felt it was needed. Additional washes of paint were applied.

Desert Mountains - N-Trak Module in progress

More mountain shots Here is a shot that focuses in on the main mountain. The only scenery work left on these is to remove all the loose sand, put down a dusting of very fine sand, and then put down some scattered scrub. Top it all of with a spray of clear matte sealer and bobs yer uncle!

    MT vs. Accumate Couplers

Re: Couplers Cinnibar, I have some of those 36 footers as well as the MDC Overtons. Exactly which couplers are you using for the replacements, and did you have to replace the trucks as well? Did you do body mounts? Inquiring minds and all that...

    Denatured Alchohol?

Denatured alcohol is simply straight grain alcohol with a toxic additive. The addition of the toxin allows it to escape the entire regulatory/taxation environment that surrounds alcohol. I'm not sure, but I believe DA was first marketed during Prohibition, because the industrial uses of...

    CN Oxford Subdivision (Layout Plan)

A modest suggestion Looks good, I'd suggest that you do something to break up the "gridlike" horizontals along the "Southern" (i.e. bottom) edge. Simply tweaking the plan a bit to modify the abundance of track that is parallel to your benchwork edge will add a lot of dynamism to the finished...

    DPM Kit Assembly

I wouldn't recommend it for two reasons: 1) you'll have to remove a fair amount of material, which will result in "resizing" your building. 2) miters are notoriously difficult to do well. Long edge miters, which is what you'll be dealing with, are even more difficult, especially if you...

    MT vs. Accumate Couplers

body vs. Truck mount Okay, not to be a knucklehead here, but how are the couplers mounted in real life? On the body, or on the truck? Second, how does one go about attaching the body mount couplers, and are there any limitations in doing so?
