    RR Xing signals

Neat circuit! Fun stuff designing these logic systems that depend partly on train movement as well as electron movement. Even more fun when you can see them actually work! Was looking back at your RR crossing circuit, one thing you might want to consider (and simulation may or may not catch...

Cat's in the layout in the railroad room...

Thanks for the warning, Val. Have sprinkled some black pepper onto the bushes and will try that alone for a few days. If it is effective no need to go stronger. Might also try a few other spices on plates to see what smells cats do not like.

Cat's in the layout in the railroad room...

Thanks for all these suggestions. I like the idea of ground red pepper (cayenne?) and mustard, maybe that will make good groundcover and shrub colouring mixture too. May not work if glued down, but sprinkled on they should stick to the other materials. Will give it a try. Maybe Woodland...

Cat's in the layout in the railroad room...

Hi Billk, It's the other layouts that are in danger, and don't have covers (yet) for them. Looking at the Relco option, but if that doesn't work then more covers are the only way to go. Was hoping to avoid that; the dust cover didn't keep the rails clean the way it was supposed to (oxide is...

Cat's in the layout in the railroad room...

Thanks, Judy did the scenicing. See thread ID 6559 in Photography, Scenery, Books, Video 'Some pictures of my scenery work'. Our trainroom (living room) has no door and locking up the critter in any other room is a good way to get the carpet torn up at the doorway as she tries to claw her...

Cat's in the layout in the railroad room...

Was intended as a dust and little-hands cover, but found it has another use as well. This is a real problem - Abby stomps people and trees flat on unprotected layouts. I'm sure others must have a similar problem. Has anyone ever tried a Relco or Gaugemaster electronic track cleaner to...

    RR Xing signals

Besides, its a lot more fun to breadboard and make it work than building virtual models that may work onscreen but not in real life. Heat up that soldering iron!!

    Do you run "local" railroads?

I live in Texas; what a thrill just after moving here from Canada to walk into the local hobby shop for the first time and finding those CN and CP N scale boxcars and locomotives (and what a hit the poor old cr card took that week!). Even ones with 'Winnipeg' and 'Manitoba' on them (my old...

    test pictures

Nice work! I really like what you've done with the rocks and weeds (and the buildings too of course). It's these important little details that makes a scene look so realistic. As far as your camera, with the necessary resolution limit for posting it doesn't matter how many megapixels a camera...

    Where is your layout located?

I had to leave 2 HO layouts behind in moves b4 finally wising up to portable. Now have an unfinished 3'x5' N scale in the bedroom, two 2'x4' N scale in the living room, and 2 small Z scale (1 under construction) wherever they happen to fit at any given time.

The portrayal of modelers in the media

Anyone else see the British comedy "Are You Being Served" episode that aired locally last night? If you follow this series, the department store staff of the clothing dept were temporarliy transferred to the toy dept; at the end of the episode the senior staff member did not want to return to...

    A Day To Remember

Thinking of those young men and women away from home right now who are risking their own lives trying to keep the events of that day and other days like it from ever happening again. We owe them and others in the past so much for our freedom today.

    miles = feet?

Hi csxengineer: Sorry to disappoint, but maybe not. 2.5 miles is 82.5 feet in N scale (2.5 x 5280 / 160), but that's track length, not square feet. An 8' x 10' layout square is 36' around the 4 edges once, not 82.5'. To get 80' around the room square is 20' each wall times 4 walls...

    Train related deaths

Another from long ago.. A fellow I used to work with told me about witnessing a friend get killed when he was a kid. They had put some pennies on the tracks, when the train was not quite finished going by one of them rushed up to the tracks to be first to get the pennies. The caboose steps...

New to forum - Mini layout tour

Re: Thanks Again! Having a significant other taking an interest in your hobby and working with you on it is one of the best things about the hobby. Not everyone is so lucky! Kinda like your own private 2 member RR club, especially if you both have talents for different things that...

New to forum - Mini layout tour

Excellent work! Out of curiosity, what is the incline grade of your trestle? Looks like from one of your photos there will be a second bridge extending off the upper level. How big do you plan to make your layout when finished? One suggestion if you don't mind - you described the platform...

    Class "A" Shay

What can i shay that hasn't already been shaid? (sorry, couldn't resist!). Amazing detail, really like what you've done. What kind of wood are you using and how do you weather it? Can't wait to see it totally weathered. Regards,
