    What if...

There were a lot of millionaires involved in model railroading...The late musician, David Rose had a huge layout. Also one of the best crooners of all time (in my opinion), Mel Torme was an avid mrr. Allan

What are ther great engines and the cheap engines

I must have at least ten Atlas engines that i have run for years. They have all been in the $100.+ range. All have been reliable running engines. I think basially you get what you pay for. Good luck, Allan

    Shelf layout construction

Built my present layout and the one before entirely with flex track. I made templets for various radii as guides. Best thing about flex track is making easments in and out of curves is easy. I used code 83 from Shinnohara (sp?) as well as their turnouts. I think I paid around $160 for the...

    Shelf layout construction

Havre been using the Controlmaster 20 for 12 years on my walkaround layout. Telephone wiring and jacks at four positions for moving around where the action is. Hasn't failed me yet! Allan

    Shelf layout construction

Your project hits home. My wife and I are contemplating a "scale-down" move to a smaller (all on one floor!) house. The layout I have now is an around the wall, "shelf" layout, free-standing...and thank God I went that direction. My previous layouts were kind of like John Allen's -- well built...

    John Allen's G&D..

Have been spending a lot of time the past several days at the two G&D sites available learning a lot about the guy I admired so much. If any of you haven't seen these sites, you should. One of the things that really impressed me was the amouint of misinformation that surrounded John's death...

    John Allen's Gorre & Daphetid Railroad - A Reminisc

Ray...Thanks for the site. John was a tremendous influence on all of us who were in the hobby 40 or 50 years ago. He still is, as far as I'm concerned. I had the priviledge of meeting John and seeing the G&D with my own eyes when I was in the service in the early 50s. Still one of the most...

    friends can be jealous

I used to know one of the better writers for one of Carsten's (RMC) pubs called Model Builder. He's gone now, the way many heavy smokers have gone, but he was a wonderful writer and a good friend. He used to comment on how many letters the editors got about covers on both MB and RMC...and...

    other hobbies?

Jake...Am reminded of my favorite book by Homer Hickam, the Rocket Boys or the movie October Sky. I, too, played with rockets AND RC, mostly soaring. Now I'm too old to play and MRR is keeping me happy. Allan

    derail

Triplex is right. In the picture you're showing, the coupler's position should be much closer to the center between the rails, i.e., longer shank, greater "swing". As Andrew says, check Kadee's couplers. I'm reasonably sure you'll find the right one. Allan

    another newbie...

I have tried several kinds of acrylics, particularly in regards to thinning for the airbrush. I've settled on Tamiya, using their brand of thinner, which I find better than any other thinner I've used. I think the clean up, especially with airbrush is a major factor for fast and easy airbrush...

    another newbie...

Am old enough to have used every kind of paint there is and I favour acrylics because of the ease of clean-up, especially with my airbrush equipment. My son, however, a master modeller, prefers enamels for his model cars. I think for the high gloss one can get with enamels. I use Tamiya flats in...

    Hooked on Couplers

The biggest danger in any hobby is the "retrofit" syndrome. You've got a hundred cars fitted out with the best Kadee couplers of the moment and then here comes this new guy! What are you going to do? Start all over again? It's the same with my layout. A fine operating DC, walk-around lay out...
