    Beyer-Garratt

Beyer-Garratt... I've got to admit the engine I've always been fasinated with has been the Beyer-Garratt. Years ago I had a stick and tissue model airplane friend in South Africa who knew I was a model railroader, and he sent me a picture of this strange articulated engine. I would love to find...

    ballast

Salt!!! Salt is a chemical. We all know what happens when it becomes wet. I don't see where the use of the many types of ballast available is going to be so costly as to be a problem. I'm trying to recall the last time the cost of ballast was a problem. Maybe quit smoking, stop...

    Roads?

Roads... I think the question that's already been asked is what type of roads? My layout in the early 1950s does not show a grat deal of asphalt. many of the major roads and minor roads were cement. So I just smooth some plaster on, paint them grey, and add tar line separations with a No.2...

    Poetry in motion?

You're a railroader at heart... Badotz...We'll try and convert you. But at this point, maybe I can do something you can't do, but you sure as hell can do something I wouldn't even dare try. I'm a retired graphic designer, and I suppose if I were thirty years younger I could figure out web...

    Poetry in motion?

Afine poem! When I was a child, we were visiting my grandparents in Boston. My mom dressed me in the finest Best & Company's camelshair outfit; coat, pants, and even the cap. My grandfather took me for a walk down Back Bay station near his office to see the big steam engines. Just as we passed...

    Miniature switches

Don..Yes, I realize RS is no place for quantity buying. It's been a long time since I've had a "control panel". I'll dig up some old pics and show you a control panel! The only switches I use are the before mentioned flush rockers I use to turn all the town blocks on and off. This allows me to...

New HO layout needs legs...Help please

You've gotten enough good ideas about support, so I won't add any more.Just want to compliment you on a nice looking switching layout. Looks like a lot of fun. Nice work, Allan

    Miniature switches

I guess I'm just not with it, but I've found Radio Shack seems to meet all of my needs. I specially like their little push type rocker on/offs that I use on the facing of the layout so you don't snag you clothes on the lever types. Allan

    DYI Decals

Bounced this one off my oldest son. He's a master model builder, especially cars. He feels do it yourself decaling is one of the hardest jobs in modeling. He says he's had great results from press type on clear film. I've linked to his page on Google Images right here which shows a Porsche of...

    abutt really has a layout!

Hy Guys...A bit more research. Even though the building of the historical society is in Collinsville, the place is actually the Canton Historical Society. They have a web site that has pics of their layout. www.cantonmuseum.org. Includes a slide show. Also a new restaurant in the old...

    Would you go DCC if..?

i understand Russ. I always thought the C-20 was a bit pricey, but in this case you get what you pay for There's enough power in that pack to run anything, and the walkaround with momentum and braking along with phone plug hook-ups has been fool-proof. In my early days of model railroading it...

    Would you go DCC if..?

Controlmaster 20 still available Russ, Sorry it took so long to post reply. Busy. Went on Google and found right at the top three suppliers listing the C-20 in the $160 to $180 range...about what i paid for it 10 years ago. Still consider it the best model money I've spent in years...

    abutt really has a layout!

There's also a Central New England HO railroad in the Collinsville Historical Society build ing. The attempt in this layout is to accurately represent real distances in HO scale. If I recall roughly 60 feet is equal to 1 mile in HO, so you can imagine the size of that room! I haven't visited it...

    abutt really has a layout!

I've been a member now for a couple months, and I suspect that some people think I'm just talk. I've uploaded new pics of my layout in the gallery for anyone who'd care to take a look at some of my building efforts. It's under the title of "abutt's Central New England HO rr". This is a small...

    Would you go DCC if..?

Russ...I run my non-DCC layout with a Controlmaster 20 MRC unit. It has built-in optional momentum and braking right on the walkaround control. I like the optional usage in that sometimes I just don't feel like realistic momentum when I'm doing a lot of switching. I've run this system for over...

    Would you go DCC if..?

I posed a similar question here on the forum when I first joined. I operate alone with car-card/waybill operation and still don't see anywhere that DCC would enhance my operation...if anything it might even make things more difficult. Hi Andrew. Allan

    What if...

Years ago I sold a yard and engine service to a guy in central New York state. All hand laid track. One of the many times I was getting out of the hobby. He worked for IBM and had a four-story barn that he was going to fill with a layout (that's why he bought my yard). He also had the largest...
