Acrylic paint for ties OK ?

I now have to go along with Andrew here. Between my last post and now I've been starting to paint the windows in my Bar-Mills kit. Unlike previous kits, these are plastic, not laser cut self-stick. The craft paint is covering very poorly. I am using an antique white, and whites are notoriously...

Acrylic paint for ties OK ?

I agree with Wayne. I like Tamiya for airbrushing. I use their own thinner. Tamiya does have a "leveling " problem so a good quality brush is a must. I've switched almost entirely to the acrylic paints found in the craft stores...Delta or Apple. Not only cheaper, but a huige variety of colors...

Acrylic paint for ties OK ?

I have used acrylic paints for just about every paint job I've had. I've stoppd buying the expensive Tamiya paints and now have a large collection of Delta and Apple paints I've gotten from the major crafts stores like Micheal's. I'm what you would call a "water-based" hobbiest now. These are...

    ballast

First of all we're not even sure of your gauge? With a user name of "Lionelalltheway", should we assume you're into O gauge? If so, 8' would just about allow a circle of track. I would strongly suggest you look at our "Modular Layout Forum". This is a wonderful way to approach the hobby...a...

    ballast

In modelling, the ballast isn't really "under" the track as in the real thing. Rather track is glued down, or nailed down, and the ballast is sprinkled down filling the spaces between ties and out from the edge the desired width. Using a soft brush, smooth ballast out so it looks realistic and...

    Sergent couplers

It seemed to take me forever to change all my rolling stock and engines to Kadees. I'll be damned if I'll go through that again. Allan:D

    First Layout

I think you're doing a good job. Looks like you've put a lot of thought into your building. I'm not sure what your division head's going to say about all those little bits of white foam clinging to your uniform though. Keep up the good work,:thumb: Allan

Young children... what age to start...?

Maybe 3 is too young! Lisa, I was five when my mother and father set up a Lionel train layout in an adjoining room to my bedroom. I was just able to see over the edge of the table. They did a wonderful job with scenery. Green oil-cloth, mirrors for lakes, many of the Lionel "working"...

    price of copper

Just had an email from a friend in Phoenix. His son's new house, sitting all framed in waiting for inspectors had all his wiring stolen. He reported it to police and they said that kind of thing has turned into an epidemic in Phoenix and other towns. The next night all his plumbing was stolen...

    Algonquin Park "Highland Inn"

Andrew, I figured they would be Grants. I use them exclusively for my scratch building, also laser cut from American Builders. Do you know you can buy a whole box of Grant windows of various sizes and shapes in one box? Allan

Help me decide which trackbed to use

Cork... I've always used cork (four layouts!). Mounted on 1/2" ceiling tile gives me the quietest and easiest to use. Ballast adheres to it well. Easy to construct turnout bases. Good luck, Allan

Type of glue on wood kits

Structure Glues... My work bench is rarely without a structure model of some kind in the works. I use carpenter's glue (yellow) for real strength, but am using the tacky glue more and more. This glue reduces the need for clamping in many cases. I, too, have a shoe box full of sprung wooden...

    Freight Cars Question

About a year ago I changed all the trucks on my rolling stock to one mfg., E-B Products, Glenview, Ill. I use plastic wheels (they make metal also) and have non-magnetic brass axles. I also changed all to Kaydee couplers. I've had no trouble with dirt build up at all. best way to avoid that is...

A tribute to a great modeler

Paul's stuff is so good that I've added his site to my favorites just so I can go there for inspiration. Wants to make me throw out all my HO gauge and go for O gauge! Well done Shamus, Allan:wave:

    New Digital Camera!

2-8-2.. Looks like a great camera. I have an Olympus 3000 which was my first, and is my only digital camera. I can go from full program to complete manual operation. So it gives the best of both worlds. It took me awhile, but one thing important I learned about these digis -- is batteries...

    New Canadian Eastern layout pics

The right way to design a layout... Although I don't know how you youngsters ever pick up an N gauge car, You certainly are going about building a layout the right way. Working out the trackage, roughing in the buildings, kind of bringing everything along together, is going to result in a...
