    Intoduction and First layout

Hi Ed..From the looks of your pics, you've answered a lot of your own questions. Many of us my age ( mid 70s) have been railroading all our lives and in the old days there was no one around to answer any questions. I can answer a few; yes, turnout cork is usually the same height as ballast cork...

    Flex Track

I don't think one can have enough tools for this hobby. When I start rebuilding the CNE ( I've recently had to move) I'll get a Xuron cutter and make my own decision.

    Flex Track

I've found the Dremel with their cutting disc the easiest way for a precision joint. Laying the rail to be cut right over where its supposed to fit and then using the Dremel gives me a perfect fit every time. I've never used the Xuron, but it would seem to me that one would have to lift the rail...

    be careful!

Wayne...I thought I was the only one to grab an exacto like a woman would, except mine nicked an artery, resulting in a 911 call by my wife. By the time they arrived it had stopped bleeding...but there sure was a lot of blood! The funny thing was, when she went on 911 she said "My husband has...

    Intoduction and First layout

Hi Ed... Wondeful start. A smooth running design. I wonder if you've given any thought to what your railroad is doing and where it's going. This is an important part of the hobby and one that helps to keep the interest up in your railroad. Keep up the good work.

    Autumn on the Rails

Excellent photography Brian. I'd appreciate some photo details, ie. type of camera, etc. You obviously know your stuff. Would certainly not classify you as an amateur. Exposures are perfect!

    Paint Brand???

Have become totally water-based...paints, scenery material, etc. I, too, have done a lot of scale building of aircraft, armor and ships, the majority being Tamiya kits. So, have dozens of bottles of Tamiya paints. Also been very happy with the several brands of water-base paints available at...

    Weekend Question 11-11 & 11 - 12

Novermber 1950. New York to San Antonio, Air Force. Longest trip I'd ever been on a train. Up night and day playing cards.

    All moved in...

The original CNE was cut into five pieces. They survived the move pretty well. Three or four buildings fell off but were rescued with minimum damage. The movers did a good job, having never moved a train layout before. They did the best they could. Now I've got to figure what to do next. The...

Question for subscribers to Railroad Model Craftsman

Got mine right on time. Now let's see how they handle a change of address. I dropped MR quite a while ago in favor of RMC. I feel they're less commercial, less "slick" and written more to the seasoned model railroader. I would recommend it to new railroaders over any of the competition because...

    Weekend Question 9 - 30 - 06

Like many of us, I found the 50s convenient for a time era in that we can logically run both steam and diesel. Also, having a time set in one's mind makes detailing easier as far as decision making for paint schemes, types of building construction, etc. I always ran steam until I got tired of the...

    Wednesday 9-27

1953, O'Misawa Machi, Honshu, Japan. Was teaching painting after hours in the enlisted men's club to earn some extra bucks, when a guy came up to me and asked if I'd ever done scenery for model railroads. I said no, but why? He then took me into the back of the building that I hadn't gotten...

    Not-so-ezdays for Ezdays

Lousy news for a Sunday morning. Thanks for the update. Give your dad the best from all of us. Don was one of my first friends on this forum. Prayers are with him for a quick recovery.

    Picture's with sunshine!

No question about it, you can't beat natural sunshine when you want your trains to look real. I'm in the middle of moving and my layout is in five sections in the basement waiting for the movers to move it into the new house next month. What I think I'll do is before I glue it all back...

    Telephone Pole lines question

I'm really happy I never attempted to string real lines on my layout. My imagination seem to work well enough. I'm especially happy now that I'm disassembling the layout for a move to the new house. I'm down to five sections to go out the hatch. Now I have to figure if I'm doing the move or...

    Pupolarity Of The Hobby

Andy...Am also a Ham (N1CLZ), and maybe the average age is where they say it is, but what matter. I've been in model railroading all my life. A Ham for the last 30 years, but so what. I, like you spend on the house and family first. If there's any left over it probably will go for the...

    Ezdays scratchbuild #1

I was afraid the AZ heat had finally gotten to Don. Never saw that chapel before. Really beautiful. Wouldn't really fit in my New England setting, but would make a wonderful model, and sure to draw comments. Ed. If all goes well will be moving to Torrington at the Torrington Ridge Estates...

    Pupolarity Of The Hobby

I think I've stated before that I have been in model ralroading most of my life. From my mother and dad's Lionel that they let me play with once in a while, to my fourth railroad that I'm running now. Even during the Korean War I was working the scenery on a huge layout at my airbase in northern...
