    Turntable

There are days when I contemplate the same project that I think it would be less of a hassle - and less expensive - to just install a Wye to turn my locomotives.

Its FRIDAY 04-11-08, Weekend Modeling Plans!

My wife works Saturdays 9 - 4, so that's a workday for me, too -- so we can have time together when she's not working. Nevertheless, I made a new year's resolution to spend at least 15 minutes working on the layout every day, and so far I've been able to keep it (except when I'm out of town...

    Lengthening an Atlas Turntable?

Sell my biggest locomotives? I'd rather sell my left kidney. <sigh> I guess I'll have to break out the saw. Any and all ideas about how best to go about this, given that the solid "table" surface is already installed, are welcome!

    Lengthening an Atlas Turntable?

Here's a photo of one modification effort I received that used an Atlas TT + two Atlas deck bridges. The turning mechanism has obviously been removed, but there were no details about how or if the modified TT was indexed. This may be a photo of an unfinished stage of the project. I am...

    Lengthening an Atlas Turntable?

I need a turntable long enough for steam locomotives, but I don't want to have to "dig a hole", so I wondered if I could somehow lengthen an Atlas turntable? Has anyone done that or does anyone have any thoughts about how I might go about that? I think the Atlas TT is about 9" diameter, and for...

Where are the Great Young Model Railroaders?

Like I need another model railroad project... I'm thinking about running around to model train shops in the area trying to get one of them interested in the idea (if they don't already have a model railroad on display) of undertaking a quick-construction project to show people how...

Where are the Great Young Model Railroaders?

One of the biggest barriers to entry into this hobby for many people is the work-to-gratification ratio. This has always been my biggest frustration. I'm a model railroader because I like to run trains (both around- and-around and something like prototypical operations). When my layouts have...

Congratulations! That looks like some great stuff! What is the road name on the blue and orange Trainmaster? I can't quite make it out...:-P

    question about this forum/website

This link brings up a page that says "Invalid Announcement specified." Maybe it's supposed to, but it's kinda confusing ... P.S. I like the $5/month recurring donation option. That's cheaper than an issue of MR or RMC ;-)

    New model railroaders?

I wonder if a LHS that devoted some space to a model RR layout _in progress_ with scheduled workshops might help kindle more interest in the hobby, especially if the techniques employed were "easy" enough that people wouldn't freak out thinking how complicated/time-consuming/expensive the hobby was?

    New model railroaders?

When I got back into Railroad Modeling about 3 years ago, my Givens & Druthers included "steam locomotives only -- no diesels." Now? I have ten steam locomotives I cherish ... and 80 diesels! Don't even ask me about 50' boxcars, which were also "off the list" when I got re-started...

    Extreme [Layout] Makeover?

That's an interesting point. Club layouts aren't the product of one person, and no one objects to that. Maybe the Extreme [Layout] Makeover could proceed along the lines of "Givens and Druthers" so the person who built the layout being made over would have input into the makeover...

    Extreme [Layout] Makeover?

    My Desktop Layout

A very interesting thread! I really like how "complete" a layout you were able to get into that space. By happenstance, today I finally cleared off the credenza in my home office space, and upon reading this thread the idea popped into my head -- "credenza-top layout?" The open space is 14"...

Do you model less in the summer?

Doesn't that play hob with your track, i.e., warping? As I mentioned above, my layout is in an insulated detached garage that for reasons of economy is only heated to 55 in winter and cooled to 80 in summer. Not only does the track suffer, I've also noticed that the hardboard I used as a...

Where are the Great Young Model Railroaders?

One of my dedicated Model Train LHS's has a working layout, DCC-equipped, that people are free to try out (with some gentle guidance from the staff). Guess who runs the trains the most? Right: the kids!

    Extreme [Layout] Makeover?

Maybe the model railroad magazines could fight their slumping circulation numbers and declining ad revenues by adapting popular TV programming themes. For example, they could start running a regular feature called "Extreme [Layout] Makeover" where they take someone's mediocre (by their...

Do you model less in the summer?

About the Same Year 'Round My layout-under-construction is in a detached garage, and, although it's insulated and has its own HVAC, it's only heated to about 55 in the Winter and cooled to about 80 in the Summer. However, I hardly notice once I get in there and start working on the railroad!
