    Lone Wolf Operators:

How often - if ever - do you have more than one train running simultaneously on your layout? My current layout construction project is designed as a point to point, with an option for continuous running, either single or double-track main line, so the most trains I can run at the same time is...

Do You Model the Alaska RR?

I should have also said that I'd appreciate any sharing on this thread, too!

Do You Model the Alaska RR?

I just came back from a rail trip in Alaska. I saw so many modeling possibilities! I especially liked the frreight car barges I saw on the ocean part of the trip. I'd like to correspond with other HO modelers interested in the Alaska RR. Thanks!

Looks like a powerful tool. What do they do with the data they capture from your traffic? What's the affiliate percentage?

Why I Like HO Track for On30

We "selectively compress" a lot of things and otherwise modify reality to accommodate unavoidable constraints. Although "purists" will probably tsk-tsk, the Model Power HO track, especially, looks way better than the hand-laid and gets my vote!

    What's your point?

My layout was planned mainly as point-to-point, from one interchange yard to another, with industries in between, with arrangements to permit continuous running when I want to display my passenger trains or run two trains at once for visitors who don't "get" operations.

Not a bad idea since I recently read that ths US savings rate is barely above 0%.

    Leftovers...

I ended up with a few 'leftovers' after building the benchwork for the Big Layout. and rather than toss them, I decided to build a little testbed for trying new things out before "importing" them to the BL. It's also very relaxing and provides a diversion when the larger project begins to seem...

    Kansas City Southern Grain Hoppers

I agree with you about this. I expect to see them through various venues - eBay, internet stores, etc. - at lower than that price after they're released. I'm wondering if anyone else will take a shot at producing these ... correctly, of course. If so, I would wait. But I'm such a KCS fanatic...

    3x4' HO Layout?

Rob, Please do scan and post - I like the idea of having a 2nd, much smaller, layout to work on - for several reasons.

    Layout 101

Regardless of your layout parameters, I agree with Russ about building your large layout using Barrows' "dominoes". When I acquired my current 31' x 29' layout space, the sight of that huge empty room was exciting ... and somewhat intimidating. Breaking the whole project down into 2' x 4'...

    Kansas City Southern Grain Hoppers

Thank you eightyeightfan1! The blurb on the Athearn website includes this caveat "Based on our popular Genesis body, but with paint schemes that aren't quite accurate for this specific model." The Horizon Hobby site lists them as "due late May 2008." It appears only one road number is...

    Kansas City Southern Grain Hoppers

As I was driving east on Highway 210 this afternoon near I-435 I saw three sidings near the KCT grain elevator that were full of these KCS grain hoppers, looking very clean and new. Gorgeous! I know they've been done in N scale (the pic is actually the model, not the real deal), but does anyone...

    Probable Layout.

I'm trying to envision what the track plan would look like if you eliminate the bottom crossover. Wouldn't that "strand" the lower segment of track? Otherwise, it sounds like a good set of adjustments, especially using smaller industries and serving two per siding -- lots more "interesting...

modern marvels: freight trains, in 1 hour

I'm watching it right now - excellent! It will be on again later, so, since I'm out of town on business, I've IM'ed my spouse to record it on our DVR.

    eBay Does It Again

A number of people I interact with about model railroading say they're spend more money at shows and less on eBay recently because by time they factor in shipping on their eBay purchases they typically would be paying more. eBay used to be a great marketplace but it doesn't seem to be as much so...

    eBay Does It Again

This statement near the end was interesting to me: "Ultimately, the goal is to restore trust and transparency and improve the buying experience, while offering needed checks and balances that ensure our sellers who provide excellent service benefit." Did I miss something? Was there a "crisis...
