    Repowering my Athearn Loco

Well, no.... it's not gonna run as smooth as the Atlas - especially if it's an atlas from the last 2 years. It will run smoother than it does now..., and if you find the right plastic safe grease you will significantly 'quite' the run by greasing the gear boxes. BUT more than a drop of grease...

    Repowering my Athearn Loco

Gary, if theres nothing they can do,... ( I love a good kitbash ) use the ppw motor and flywheels, use/get older athearn splines cut them and use the fish tube trick to couple up to the newer style athearn spline. It's a frankenstein, you'll void your warrantee, but if you choose to accept...

    Repowering my Athearn Loco

Not to worry, actually yes I did forget... a Proto motor is also a good choice. first of all when doing this don't throw anything away just yet.... anyway... look at the ends of the fly wheels where the black plastic is.... you can take a pair of needlenose plyers and pull those out. go to the...

    Repowering my Athearn Loco

hey Gary, Check to see if the CF-7's motor has a 2 mm shaft into the flywheels. (thickness) if it does, you won't have to replace the flywheels, or worry about drive link problems. You also have a choice of motor you want to use: 1. Mashima (proto power west many favored) 2. old sagami; if you...

BNSF total or partly themed layout

Now that is a great idea. I will do that soon. In any case I think my question was misunderstood. I meant: are there clubs that specifically run BNSF or former flags. My home layout is/will be as such.

    is it true that....

Hey all  So, a friend of mine told me Kato is about to announce/release an SD 70 ACe. I find this highly unlikely since they just redid the SD 40-2. Does anyone know if this is going to happen or not? Dan

    New Gal

welcome abord Aberdabr, The hooks you are asking about are called couplers, they're not usually hard to replace. (u probably have the standard horn hook type, but maybe have plastic knuckles) Anyway a hobby shop will be able to help you with that. HO isn't usually the under the tree type of...

    Next Presidents Choice Train Set?

I'm stumped on the part about $120-140 for an IHC loco.... Has the quality level of these been pumped up to the level of Proto 2000, Atlas and Kato? Dan

    new aquisition: P2K Sd-9

Hey Glen, Once again for Proto 2000 stuff call Jerry in service directly.... I tried to order fans ect. for a gp 20 to kitbash from Conrail to BN and parts/sales dept. told me that they only sell the whole shell, not the parts (even though they have the exploded diagram ect.) and a new shell...

BNSF total or partly themed layout

howdy all  been a while since i posted, anyway i live in nyc but may be moving in 1-3 years. i've seen a few BNSF/BN/Sante Fe layouts online by doing searches, but was thinking theres got to be more... Do most people in clubs in the mid/west part of the country have a club roadname and...

    Memory Loss?

I just reread the problem you are having.... I think the problem is either; 1. DCC isn't hooked up quite correctly or 2. the decoders themselves, I use TCS decoders exclusively unless I want sound. They are inexpensive. I would try swapping out decoders before ripping out any wiring. Dan

    axe the ATLAS's...

Wow, now I'm hearing problems with Atlas and good things about Peco. I've always heard good things about Peco though. I think switches are just very sensitive things and have to be 'in gauge' in all respects. Who knows if one was twisted ect... I'm gonna get some Pecos and compare them to the...

    Best way to cut styrofoam?

YUP! A well sharpened Swiss/pocket Knife will do that pink/blue foam clean. If your not worried about a clean edge, a large serated (toothed) kitchen knife is fastest, and if you have a ginsu or ginsu knockoff (no kidding) that will cut a little cleaner and faster still, but not as clean as the...

LifeLike Proto N GP38-2 erratic operation

Although these are great troubleshooting tips... Proto has a warrantee you will enjoy that Kato and Atlas do not: ie forever. The more you take it apart the less they will honor the warrantee. Protos tech guy is Jerry in the service dept. (HO anyway, think he does N too though) Call him and...

    2 loco switching

Hey trevor, If you are running DC, then you will have to either use a magnet (HO right?) to uncouple or use a wand or by hand and then put the diesel into a block you can turn the power off to. If you are running DCC then the same uncoupling applies (I bet you already know that but I tend to...

    HO in the 70's

Hey All, I was just reading the post about dirty track and rhtastro had compared the stuff we had in the 70's to today. I had mostly Tyco, AHM and Bachmann as many did, but I also had an Atlas SD 35, which was my best runner. I still have it today, I put a Spectrum motor in it as the original...
