    Rivet Punch Question

That is a very handy product! thanks Dave.

    Database Error?

I haven't had that, but every time I go to post, it tells me that I'm making a duplicate post.

time to get started on a new layout

I don't know how I missed this thread before. Nice work. Hope you've made some progress which you can share.

    "John Bull" and "DeWitt Clinton"

I too have had a couple repairs done to mine...I think I've had it since 1992. It's short wheelbase always was problematic on #6 turnouts (the insulated frogs) and it likes to bounce on Code 83 track. Still, it has been going strong without repairs since about 1995. I still really like...

    Whats wrong with Atlas Turnouts¿

I've never tweaked my atlas turnouts and had 20 years of trouble free operation. The lone exception was a snap switch which I had to replace (probably ballast related). I have both Code 83 and Code 100. I do think Peco turnouts are nice, but the added cost is no where close to worth it for me...

Then broad curves are absolutely out. You're going to be limited to 15"-18" curves. Keeping a section limited to 18" would be good for medium length stuff, and have 15" curves elsewhere would allow for a more interesting track plan. I might try a few plans in the atlas software for you as well...

    Nice.

What era draws your attention the most?

I regard the 1936 Berlin Olympics as the birth of the TV era. Yet, that wasn't the first broadcast...and radio was still king (and still is for me...I watch 9hrs of tv per week from September to the start of February...none in between) The great depression was good for the C&S. There was an...

    That's an interesting reason. Cool.

Can you go all the way around the room? Ocalicreek is right that gradual curves are fine if you can go all the way around the room...but only on the outside. You mentioned that you like billboard reefers...these are typically the 36' Athearn/MDC cars I mentioned. 70s era passenger cars were...

What era draws your attention the most?

Amen! Yep. The Baldwin 2-8-2s were unique. No one other than the D&RGW ever had a K-36. Second hand K-27s ended up in Alaska (due to WW2, I think...I know K-28s did) and on the RGS. The K-27s started off as funky Vuclain compounds with sloped back tenders  Odd ducklings. EBT #12 was...

    layout "contest"

18" curves are tight. While many locomotives will supposedly go around them, it isn't easy. It is especially bad with full length passenger cars. With the space you have, I'd scrap the modern theme entirely and switch to an early 20th century theme. I'd use 15" curves and have a roster of...

Temp storage under the layout... ;-) Sure that a 60" or so shelf isn't kosher? Can make a bit more layout if it is... Also, will this be a mainline with 4-8-4s of a branch with nothing larger than a 2-8-0? A branch may be able to get away with 18"R...while a mainline might be nice with...

What era draws your attention the most?

Well, I'm tired of the D&RGW  After all, 90%+ of the stuff they cover is either Rio Grande or Freelance with all Rio Grande power and mostly Rio Grande rolling stock circa 1950. That is quite trite. Especially the "freelance" stuff which really blends together for me. I'd like to...

What era draws your attention the most?

There certainly are interesting variations in construction over the years. The area I model didn't really look all that different in 1930 as in 1880...aside from the cars and hats. The biggest change was the appearance of the trains. There certainly was quite a bit of cool architecture...

What era draws your attention the most?

I have no illusions about the 19th century being simpler. I'm a South Park fan...my railroad's construction was halted for 4 years due to one of the panics which occurred every 20 years. I've read enough about the development of vacuum & air brakes to know how awful it was. Nearly every...

    A new model railroader...

What era draws your attention the most?

Keen observations. Your comment regarding the variety of passenger diesels jumped out to me. The variations in passenger power do seem greater (in appearance) to me now than at any point in the diesel era. Early on it was dominated by EMD E units (and F units) and ALCO PA-1s. To a...

What era draws your attention the most?

Because of the major functional changes and technological developments. The Pre-grouping and pre-nationalization railroads in Britain are a huge draw. Sure, they still retained some character, but not as much as before. A LBSC terrier is an extremely cool (and popular) locomotive. Each...
