    Z Shay

Couplers I believe. The kit is all the white metal castings needed to turn a Marklin F-7 into a shay...except the couplers. Mountain Man, can you imagine one of those shays and a 2-8-0 decending a nearly scale size cork screw gulch! WOW! Nn3 is tempting to me.

tips for kit bashing some locos

How close would you like them to be? I have a usra 2-8-2 that I wanted to look a bit more like a modern NKP 2-8-2...but I didn't want to completely redetail it, so I just replaced the headlight and added illuminated number boards. I don't really notice the airpumps and such, as those two small...

Bowser USRA Lt Mikado, Deluxe Kit (Lord help me)

Looks like fun. I've always wanted to build one of those.

    Kemtron USRA Mikado?

For the record, Kemtron is now part of Precision Scale. Some of their detail parts are also available in plastic now. They make beautiful working handcar kits in O scale. Would you like to post some pictures of here? I have a 4-8-2 that started off as a Varney 4-6-2 and the boiler was...

    Z Shay

There are Nn3 shays. They run on z-scale track, and possibly could be used with some modification... https://www.republiclocomotiveworks.com/show_item.php?ID=484

    Newbie -- model builder program

Although I doubt that it will help with cardstock, when you start playing around with wood and styrene, I've generally found emery boards to typically work better than files. Classic 1950s techniques involved basswood frames with cardstock sheathing. I went to an NMRA meeting in October and...

    The Planning Summit

In the past, I've shortened turnouts by trimming off the excessive length immediately beyond the points and beyond the frog. I did this with Atlas Custom Line #4s and it worked marvelously. I suppose you lose some of the advantages to that with #6 turnouts. I suppose your trick is that you...

    VIRGINIAN gondola brake systems

Battleship Gons! Cool. I think F&C offer them in Resin for HO modelers. That is a very intriguing brake arrangement on the brass model...never seen anything quite like it before. The brake levers closest to the trucks would usually have two functions: activate the brake beams on the trucks...

    Passenger car building

Russ, thank you! Yes, the car is at the museum. Since I started scratch building 19th century equipment...and searching for information on the prototypes...I've run across all sorts of interesting museums and equipment which I previously didn't know to exist...such as Ward Kimball's...

    Newbie -- model builder program

I suggest getting yourself plenty of new x-acto blades, a scale, and a caliper. If modeling in HO, G, or N, get a scale ruler from your hobby shop. If modeling in S or O, go to an art store and get an architect's scale...a far better tool for the money (For less than the price of a 6" hobby...

    Scratch build

Yep, paint them next time...they look too much like Cliff Grandt built them, and detract (slightly) from your fine paint job. You might also want to glaze them. Congrats on you first scratch build! It looks fine! You can certainly put it in a place of honor, for you did a good job!

    Collectible Kits?

It depends...since that is clearly a Walthers kit from 5 years ago, I doubt you'd find a collector who'd give you any more than you paid for it. A rare, high quality kit will commonly fetch a small fortune since they were limited run (not injection molded) craftsman kits of classic prototypes...

    Name that Layout

Combat, things look nice and I enjoy a good story in the scenery. The only suggestion I have is that things look a touch shiny...a little dullcoat sprayed over the scene might eliminate it. The details look great...the wheelbarrows, cones, and such.

    Passenger car building

I'm currently working on three passenger cars. I don't think I've shared them here as of yet. They are, as might be guessed, South Park cars. One is a baggage-express car and the others are coaches. The coaches were built by Barney and Smith in 1878 (and today I drove past what remains of...

    Childhood railfanning...

I'm 25, my brother is 27. In the picture, my brother is 3.5 and I'm 1.5...the same ages as his two children today. We model railroaded together, with a break during jr high, until he lost interest at the start of college (his wife is dismissive of the hobby and he had a huge argument over...

    Train Shows Increasing

A GC/MS person I know, a big fan of CSI, swears up and down that the vast majority of the things they do on there are not possible in analytical chemistry...besides...it is tv...everything is possible except killing everyone on the island aside from the survivor :p Jean-Claude van Damme would...

    Train Shows Increasing

60% Flemish, 40% French. He's a native French speaker...but the show can have him speaking Dutch! Yes, in its history line, Belgium remained a part of Holland and all languages other than Dutch have been suppressed! This is primarily so they can refer to "Dutch waffles" instead of "Belgian...

    Train Shows Increasing

I don't know, but I'm certain that he (whom my good friend Luc from France informs me, pretends not to remember how to speak his native language of French when in France sign1), if he were to team up with Chuck Norris and Steven Segal, could destroy the death star while kicking the teeth out of...
