    Fluesheet's Builders Photos

Let me guess... LNER, LMS, GWR, and SR. A fine big four indeed...although... LB&SC, SE&CR, and L&SWR were all >> than the SR

n scale steam kitbashing - canadian locos

Not bad. You might also want to consider Premo synthetic clay...it is great stuff.

    Scratch build

It is a good question. It is rather funny on the nmra contest page where it talks about how they consider a model to be scratch built if XX% is from scratch...but understandable, since most of us don't have the time (or ability) to plant a tree, let it grow, harvest it, turn it into scale...

    Fluesheet's Builders Photos

The Big Four became part of the NYC family..in the 1920s or so...Cleveland, Columbus, Cincinnati, and St. Louis were the four cities. It was (and is) a mainline railroad. The mainline has a nice, massive concrete Viaduct in Sidney, OH...which was part of a major relocation in the 1920s of the...

    Chalk for weathering?

I use artist pastels. I find them to be far cheaper than model railroad weathering powder sticks...but just as effective. Just don't forget to dullcoat it when you're down...to avoid it falling off.

    Any On30 folks here

There are a few On30ers...some are periodic and some just dabble in On30. I'm the lone On3 modeler. Off the top of my head...Tin Goat has built Free-Mo On30. I think Sumpter has dabbled. I've picked up a few items in the past...but only for conversion to On3 and On2. I think Conopus has...

Starting a new project – a wooden coal tower

Merry Christmas Bernard, and thank you for this early present of viewing you latest work! I have enjoyed admiring the construction of that staircase. It is beautiful.

    Engine Terminal build

Yes. But, in experience from growing around people whom did that...it is nice when the TT is long enough that you don't have to do so. Auxiliary tenders and tool cars are frequently uni-directional. Very few railroads actually used aux tenders and even fewer carried around tool cars, so this...

    Scratch build

In my book, cheaper and time are components in better. It isn't worth it to scratch build 200 NBWs for a stockcar...yet building it from scratch can be cheaper than buying a resin kit. Wayne's advice is top notch, as usual!

    Scratch build

There really isn't a fine line between what is scratch, what is kitbashed, and what is just kit built. Technically, you could make the case that neither my models nor Bernards are scratch built...even though I make my own trucks and hardware...only NBW castings, couplers, brake wheels, and...

    So what is "narrow?"

I ran across a table recently: US narrow gauge mileage: 17,608mi 3' gauge 470ish mi 3'6" gauge 200ish mi 2' gauge 40mi 2'6" Asking what is standard and why is a logical question to understand what is narrow...but it is an even more difficult question to answer.

    Engine Terminal build

134' is plenty long enough for any of those...it can handle an 18" wheelbase locomotive. The DDA40X, the longest of all diesels, fits on a 90' turntable...which was a very common medium sized TT. Cheyenne, I do believe, is 120'...for the Big Boys. In my previous post, I mentioned that Ron...

tips for kit bashing some locos

Right. There are few details on the boiler...the beauty of streamlining. Further, the mechanism is the hard part...and you already have that. If you screw up the mechanism, it will run poorly...but that is not an issue here...because it is pre-assembled!. If you screw up the new boiler, you...

tips for kit bashing some locos

Ok...you have a nice 2-10-x mechanism. Great. How do the boilers compare in diameter, length...I'd guess too short and too thin. Still, both have 63" drivers which is huge. Perhaps you can get the four wheel trailing truck from somewhere...such as a manufacturer of 2-8-4s. You are looking...

I'd try wood filler before plaster. Elmer's is available at hardware stores, lowes/hd, and craft stores.

    VIRGINIAN gondola brake systems

I have a piece of two from custom brass...some of the details aren't quite right (neither case was their fault...but rather the plans they used!). Perhaps a line is missing from the triple valve. I previously made the mistake of assuming that brass manufacturers got it correct! I can't tell...

    Kemtron USRA Mikado?

And your mike has been discovered to have more character than any off the shelf locomotive! Do you plan to customize its appearance to your railroad? Its distinctness helps with this...when people come over, they won't be able to tell who built it, other than you! :thumb:
