    Samhongsa/Athearn

That is definitely an NKP 2-8-2! Most of the class was sold to NdeM around the time of WW2. I see that he's added the cylinder braces (as odd as it sounds, they were needed!), changed the builders plate, altered the tender (replaced, I believe), and a few other odds and ends. His tender is...

    Samhongsa/Athearn

I just thought I'd address the Samhongsa portion of the question. Samhongsa, whom was a major brass builder, is no more. They produced the first two genesis steam locomotives (I don't know whether it was a 100% Samhongsa engine in an Athearn box, or what the relationship was). The list price...

Calling all Thomas the Tank Engine modellers!

No. Can't you tell, she's in America! She was converted to Westinghouse air brakes and is no longer needed to serve as a brake coach. Let's just hope Thomas has an easier time getting home than the Flying Scotsman had on his trip...

Do's and Dont's of Model Railroading

My LHS is having their annual train show this weekend. They had some layouts set up and a bunch of nice sales. They do it primarily for three reasons (I think): 1) clear out stuff like you mentioned (it is labeled) 2) clear out overstocked stuff 3) try to get new people into the hobby (lots of...

Do's and Dont's of Model Railroading

Don't lay a turnout on a vertical curve...a downward vertical curve. It will dramatically increase the number of accidents (speaking from experience!). If you can't decide if you'll like what you've just done or not...don't try to justify it. Tear it out and redo it. Don't attempt to talk...

    New SoundTraxx site

Ooohhhh....I just took a look at the new Blackstone stuff... If only I modeled the Rio Grande in HOn3...and didn't prefer kits... The kicker for me were two items: -The High Side gondolas with stakes you add separately. The reason for this is that the Rio Grande unloaded these cars with a...

Calling all Thomas the Tank Engine modellers!

I love the CNJ logo on Spencer's side. My nephew received him for his birthday from me, and he looked nice pulling a string of N&W passenger cars. For the record, their are two A4s in North America...the Dominion of Canada and the Dwight D. Eisenhower (and 4 in the UK). I've had the...

    Precision Scale Co. ???

PSC is based in Montana. BLI is based in Florida (PCM is part of BLI). They are unrelated. Interestingly, I saw in the current Gazette that NWSL is now a part of Evergreen. I wonder who will purchase Cloverhouse.

    Bachmann 4-4-0, More than shay?

Is it the only locomotive that uses the wheel sets? The truck is simple, and I would suspect that the shay's special tooling/labor for the geared axles, cylinders, and drive train would trump anything on any other locomotive (except maybe the climax). Another thing...at this point, the...

Brand New Steam Loco Now Operational

Right. Cooper bridge ratings will vary depending upon 1) total weight 2) axle loading 3) distribution of weight over several axles. The most trouble doesn't necessarily come from the total engine weight, but rather when only, say, 4 of the heaviest axles are over the bridge same span. So, on...

Sn3 Mogul from an HO Roundhouse Oldtime Mogul

Sn3 is slightly narrower than HO. He did have to narrow the frame. I've widened On30 stuff to On3, and you can fill the gaps with any kind of space...homemade plastic washers, new frame overlays, or such. You pretty much can't trim the motor...instead you'd have to replace it. Sn3: S...

    What's your problem?!

It was worth the try...perhaps you can hang a bikini team poster there, tell him, and maybe he'll help out while he's there  Is there a chance that you could form a local club, to get operators to help out?

    What's your problem?!

Les, Is it possible that you could use an office chair to duck and roll under your layout? If nothing else, make friends with some local kids to duck under the layout It's only child labor if you pay them

Steve Austin's On30 Elkhorn Iron & Timber Co.

That is both incredibly cartoonish and over the top. Of course, I've always enjoyed the cartoonish and over the top work of Malcom Furlow...and I appreciate and enjoy the skills of Steve Austin.

    What's your problem?!

This curve that I've ripped out. It dipped just slightly under my minimum radius, and caused my steel underframe Grandt Line cars to derail. If I add weights to the cars, the wheels will be knocked out of the trucks. It also would cause my 0-4-0t to jump the tracks. Fortunately, my moguls...

    Bachmann 4-4-0, More than shay?

Another important thing, which connects both of the above together. How many 19th century models are there? IHC & Rivarossi's OO scale 4-4-0s (which are marketed as HO, but aren't). B-man's 4-4-0s, Atlas's 2-6-0. The MDC/Roundhouse stuff was typically 1900+ stuff masquarading as 19th century...

    Any On30 folks here

I'd love to see pictures of that as it comes along! I've long felt that On30's greatest potential is in modeling south-of-the border stuff. Unique, exotic layouts...with equipment in comparable shape to what we modelers love (heavily weathered, lots of homemade looking stuff).

Brand New Steam Loco Now Operational

I wonder which would be more difficult, acquiring a lease on...and raising the funds to restore...a 2-6-6-6, or actually operating it. The axle loadings on it are unbelievable. A big boy has 12 axles on which to distribute its weight, but an Allegheny only has 10 axles and has more weight to...
