    Weekly Photo Fun 8/29

Did they, I wonder? The engine is a fantasy, as SP had no SD40-2s.

Kato F40ph...Only available in RTA and Amtrak Phase 3?

Errr... no. The F40PH has been retired by Amtrak, but commuter lines still use them. I think NJT still does. And, of course, VIA Rail's fleet is still predominantly F40PHs.

How Did The Different Scales Get Their Names?

IIRC, a little-known fact of model railroading history is that the use of Gauge 1 track as metre gauge was introduced before it was called G in the 70s. In the late 60s, 1/22.5 was introduced as K, for king-size. I can't remember if this was LGB, some predecessor thereof, or a company from which...

    Confounding The Whyte Sytem

I thought you were going to link to this page: http://www.dself.dsl.pipex.com/MUSEUM/LOCOLOCO/belgian/smashsys.htm Personally, I think this one messes up the system just as much: http://www.dself.dsl.pipex.com/MUSEUM/LOCOLOCO/hurricane/hurricane.htm The drive axle isn't even on the locomotive! A...

help me choose a locale for my new layout

Seattle was served by GN, NP, SP&S, UP and MILW, IIRC. I've seen the Walthers 0-8-0 bashed into an NP 0-8-0.

    square or vanderbuilt?

Definitely: their duplex experiments were proof. A little of a tangent, but I thought of it since this thread is about how locomotives look. I'm definitely an aesthete. I like the PRR, though their paint schemes were plain and their steam locomotives weren't attractive by my standards. Their...

This is an example of what I meant: http://rr-fallenflags.org/misc-n/necr9537ass.jpg It's interesting that it happens to resemble this, because that makes it more believable. Few paint schemes are totally unique, and if your freelance scheme vaguely resembles a real one, that usually makes it...

    Another scratched tender.

I was just thinking, "B&O had some long Vandys, but didn't they have freight car trucks?"

    MAJOR structure re-model. (I'm back.)

    Definitely convincing Southwestern.

    square or vanderbuilt?

I'm wondering if aesthetics sometimes had something to do with it. Specifically, the GS series. SP liked Vanderbilts, but didn't use them on their most famous engines. I suspect it was to retain a streamlined look.

    Those Strange Looking Boxcars?

They did, generally. That's not the first relatively recent shot of an open rack I've seen... and, IIRC, the last one I saw was CN too.

Based on New England Central? Sprues can be very useful. Back in the days when movie and TV spacecraft were physical models, sprues were sometimes used to create pipes and other details. Yours is a rare case of sprues being used to make an entire recognizable structure.

I'm going to have a work place again!!

An Allegheny with an N&W tender... what is this for? An alternate history where the N&W bought Alleghenies? Considering that the C&O started to retire theirs in '52, N&W could even have got them used.

    New trees

The trunks look good, but the foliage is a bit... wispy. And there's a scaling issue. On trees that size, the branches would cause the foliage to form more, smaller clumps.

    Train Show

I'm not sure, but I've heard Europeans call the GG-1 "the American Crocodile". :D

    square or vanderbuilt?

I think that description is much more apt for the narrow-gauge 2-8-2 farther up the page.

    Those Strange Looking Boxcars?

Well, I immediately understood what you were talking about. As you can see, there are different types of this car.

I was wondering what you meant by Alligator. To a North American, that nickname normally refers to RSD-15s. I was thinking it might be another kind of centercab electric. That's a Crocodile! ;-)

Why is the TH&B so popular?

I guess it must be strictly a local thing. Before joining this site, I didn't know of any TH&B fans/modellers! The Ontario-specific line I really knew of (and the one I'm still interested in) was Ontario Northland.

    Sanding facilities

Ouch... A Pacific or Mikado, IIRC, could achieve around 3000hp. "Ouch" because the Brits ran hand-fired Pacifics. Even allowing for them being about 2/3 the weight, and presumably power, of the American ones, they couldn't achieve full power continuously. That's why the Ten-Wheeler never became...
